Selah! Think about it!
by Eld.T.Matthew Stepp

1John 2:15- “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

A worldly Christian has divided loves, and they cannot truly love the LORD, until they evict the Love of World out of their lives.

Mt.6:19-24- “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth…But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. …No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

Worldly here is the adjective, while Christian is the noun. So that means a Christian that is acting like the world? Selah! Think about it!

A Worldly Christian is a child of God that is putting down roots in this world and no longer considers themselves to be a Pilgrim.

Heb.11:13-16- “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. …But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”

This passage is referencing the life of Abraham and Sarah, and as we contrast them with Lot and his wife, we see a striking difference! Although both had riches in this life, Abraham didn’t build his life around them, while Lot’s family became immersed in the things of the world. Lk.17:32-33- “Remember Lot's wife. (she didn’t want to lose her old life in S***m with the grandbabies!) Whosoever shall seek to save his (worldly) life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.”

Saving and losing our lifestyles will show what kind of Christian we are: Dedicated Pilgrim or Worldly Resident! Too late now for Lot and his wife to teach their children to be pilgrims! Selah! How Terrible!

2Pet.2:7-8- “And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)”

If it wasn’t for this inspired verse using the words “just Lot” and “righteous soul” we’d never know for sure from the Genesis accounts whether this man was saved or not! He “looked” like the world, he “smelled” like the world, he “sounded”, “tasted” and “felt” like the world! Must be a worldly duckling!

How awful if our men have long hair; women have shorn hair; if alcohol, divorce and drugs are present in our houses, too… Sc****ly clad women and tattooed men call themselves Christian…? Derogatory remarks, filthy jokes and cussing come from both Worldly Christians and Christian Worldsters.

Watch who comes out of “R” rated movies, Sunday sports arenas and Democratic Polling booths! Can you really tell the difference between the modern “Christians” and the world? If you can’t, they are Worldly Christians!

King Saul lost his kingdom for “partial obedience” (1Sam.15:16-23). How many Christians today are living in that same partial obedience of God’s Word?

Surely we’d never be like King Jehoiakim of old (Jer.36) and use a penknife to cut out the parts of God’s Word that we don’t like, but so many Worldly Christians in reality are wielding that same “penknife” when they purposely ignore entire passages of God’s Word concerning their responsibilities to Tithe, Observe the Sabbath, Attend church, women wearing the headcovering; by changing the commandments of God and substituting the “ministries of men”… Selah! Think about it!

Mk.8:31-38- “And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.”

Hard to believe that immediately after one of Peter’s greatest confessions earlier in the chapter, that now he is found rebuking his Master!

Yet that is what Arminianism does, taking so many shallow Christians with it, turning churches of God into assemblies of Satan! “And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

“…Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

When we find ourselves loving the world, may God send us a sermon, a witness or a Scripture to send us scurrying back into the arms of our Saviour and OUT OF THIS WORLD! Selah! Think about it!

Selah! Think about it!

Ps.69:20-26- “Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

“Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake. Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

“Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents. For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten…”

Psalm 69 is a powerful Messianic Psalm that has many prophesies fulfilled at Calvary itself. Imagine those soldiers, etc that offered our LORD the gall and vinegar, not knowing they were fulfilling a centuries-old prophecy! Selah! Think about it!

However the Psalm goes on in this passage to pronounce a curse upon the generation of Jews that rejected their Messiah. His own People that had the “oracles of God” (Rom.3:2); that had a “table” of bounty (our text) and those that He had come to present Salvation unto, both as individuals and a nation (should have been for their welfare)- rejected him…

Jn.1:11- “He came unto his own, and his own received him not.” Dark and terrible words are pronounced here by David, the Sweet Psalmist, for those that refused to believe in the Words and Works of Jesus Christ, the Son of God!

Isa.53:3-4- “He is despised and rejected of men; …he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God (see text), and afflicted.”

Lk.17:22,25- “And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. …But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.”

Lk.11:31-32- “The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here. …That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.”

In Rom.11:9-10, this curse is quoted by the Apostle Paul and he reveals to the Gentiles that the season of Salvation for them is occurring between Daniel’s 69th and 70th weeks. Dan.9:26- “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself…”

Rom.11:11,25- “I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. …For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.”

The Conclusion (End of Mt.24:13) of the fulness of the Gentiles will be the PriTrib Rapture of the Saints of the Church Age, where God will start the clock on Israel’s 70th Week as the Last Trump is sounded.

That this terrible curse has followed the Jews is commonplace reading in the history books. Except for the Grace of God, this Rejection Curse would have destroyed them time and again, in Anti-Semite century after century- N**i Germany and Communist Russia, included…

But God has not cast away His people forever, but will return as promised to save them… Zech.12:9-10- “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced…”

Mt.24:30- “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

Rev.19:11,15- “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. …And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

Selah! Think about it!
by Eld.T.Matthew Stepp

1Timothy 1:8- “But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;”

Actually, the Law is ALWAYS good from God’s perspective. It’s when man’s flawed intellect and depraved heart enters the equation that God’s Eternal Law(s) becomes something other than unqualified “good”. Selah! Think about it!

And that’s the purpose of these first thoughts of the Apostle Paul to Timothy. 1Tim.1:5- “Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:” The END or PURPOSE of the Commandment/Law is LOVE!

The Law has ALWAYS been a GOOD thing for men and women. Love is the Purpose of it- and surely Love is the End Goal of its being written, either on paper, or in the hearts of men.

Primarily it is the Love of God toward us, in that He is instructing us through the Law how to live righteously and with holy awareness of God’s Desires for our lives.

But it is also a Reciprocating Love toward God and a Reverence of His Will. His Commandments are not grievous to His children, but rather they are a Rejoicing of giving us Purpose, Fulfillment and Acceptance among the Beloved!

Holy Living according to God’s Law will affect multitudes of our fellow men in the most positive and loving way, and a Nation that aligns it’s statutes and ordinances after the Bible’s Commandments will be a most blessed nation! Ps.33:11-12- “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD;”

In our text passage, the Apostle takes into account that this Wondrous Law of God might be considered “bad” in the sense that it might be abused by sinners and particularly, those in positions of Authority. Ignorant users of the Law were trying to teach an abominable “version” of the Truth.

1Tim.1:6-7- “From which (the Law) some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.”

This is where our text verse comes in, following this aberrant rendering of God’s Holy Law into something it was never meant to be! “But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;” is what the Apostle asserts!

Certainly, the Pharisees did a monstrous job of corrupting the Commandments of God! Mt.23:23-28- “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cu**in, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. …Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! …Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”

The LORD continues His scathing denunciation of them in Mk.7:7-13- “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. …Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”

1Tim.1:9- “Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,”

The Apostles conclude their Defense of the Law with a clear picture of its value and application. Rom.7:7- “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.”

Jas.1:21-25- “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

That’s a LAWFUL use of the LAW!! Selah! Think about it!
