Selah! Think about it!
by Eld.T.Matthew Stepp

Ps.92:1- “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:” Ps.79:13- “So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.” 1Cor.10:31- “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

Five times the Preacher in Ecclesiastes links eating and drinking with the acknowledgment of it as God’s Gift or Portion. The receipt of God’s Gifts require proper Thanksgiving and Humble Prayer!

Ecc.9:7- “Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now (not before!) accepteth thy works. (including prayer!)” (Ecc.2:24/3:13/5:18/8:15/9:7).

I remember several times in our busy family’s life, when we were hungry, and as we pulled out of the Hardee’s drivethru, some of us might go ahead and dive into the burgers and fries, when my son Noah’s voice came from a car seat in the back asking, “Dad, did we give thanks yet?”

Ah, how my heart smote me! At even such a young age, our children knew that the “right” thing to do, was to close our eyes, bow our heads and acknowledge with Thanksgiving and Glory the Blessings of our Heavenly Father in supplying our daily provisions.

How awful for our thoughts to wander far enough away from our continual communal prayer with our LORD, that we forget to Thank Him for the very least of His Mercies! Selah! Think about it!

It’s even included by our LORD Jesus in the model prayer to instruct His disciples how to pray. Mt.6:9-13- “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

“Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

As we look around this world (outside of our extraordinary America’s bountiful blessings from God) we see how common famine is and has been throughout the millennia.

How marvelous it should therefore be unto us, that we should consider with “carefulness”, “astonishment” and “trembling” that the LORD has again “put another potato in the pot” and provided our family’s daily nourishment…!

Eze.12:17-19- “Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness; And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and drink their water with astonishment, that her land may be desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein.”

If we neglect to offer thanks before we eat or drink anything, the LORD will NOT take it lightly! Is.65:11-15- “But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

“Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name:”

Dan.6:13- “Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.”

Surely three times a day, does not have to line up with our meals, here in America, but as surely as Daniel was known to pray regularly (in public, too?), so let us also be known by our fellow citizens as those that give Glory and Thanksgiving to our God as regularly and continually as we eat and drink! Selah! Think about it!
by Eld.T.Matthew Stepp

John 20:21-23- “…he breathed on them…Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.”

Matthew 18:17-18- “And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Matthew 16:18-19- “…upon this rock I will build my church; …And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

It would be amusing, if it were not so sad, when one reads the Protestant commentaries on these three passages. Almost as one, they denounce the Catholic papacy for using these passages in “church capacity” to elevate poor Peter to a Pope, with the Authority that is so clearly evident in “binding, loosing, remitting and retaining”…

So, where do they go? Since they only really believe in a useless “Universal, Invisible” church, what do they do with this Biblically-evidenced Authority? Selah! Think about it!

Almost without exception, these commentators go to the Gospel. They apply this remitting of sins (or loosing?) to the Release that the Gospel gives, as delivered by Peter and the church Universal. But OBVIOUSLY, they hasten to say, ONLY God can forgive sins!

The Authority of remitting sins, is therefore not IN Peter, or the church’s power, but merely pictured in this loosing, remitting and binding…

How foolish and strained these passages become, simply because so FEW of these commentators even know what a New Testament Church is…! Beloved, it’s a Local, Visible Landmark Assembly, known in this day and age, as a Baptist Church!

And that’s whom the LORD is talking to, imparting the Holy Spirit unto, and giving this Awesome Authority unto! HIS Baptist “ekklesia” (Greek word for church- meaning Local, Visible Assembly- Ac.19:32,39,41)…!

“…as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” –Jn.20:21. “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven…” –Mt.16:19. Delegated Authority rings in these passages!

Certainly, the passage in Mt.18 is the clearest demonstration of Church Discipline. As we pass from person-to-person reconciliation to “tell it unto the church” , there is Authority here to “loose” this man from Proper Membership and Fellowship. He becomes as a heathen or publican!

Mi In the language of Jn.20, their sins are “retained”. The only way for this disciplined member to restore the Sweet Fellowship of the LORD’s church is to come seeking forgiveness and restitution.

The LORD gives also this Authority of restoration to His body, and they can “bind” their beloved member back into full Right Hand of Fellowship, or again, as John the Beloved puts it: “Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them …” Sin debt paid for? Naw! Not by us! Just forgiven (for Christ’s sake) and put aside… (Eph.4:32).I
In the proper context of Church Authority (and Discipline), these verses harmonize and make perfect sense! No strained application of the Gospel and Salvation are necessary. Of course, no man (or church) has the Authority or Ability to save or forgive sins unto Salvation! So why try to twist the passage thusly toward a Gospel application? It’s not talking about Authority to Save! It is clearly, however, giving this “august body” a whole realm of staggering Authority! There is no Higher Authority in America’s towns, than their local Baptist church, whether in Wayne, WV or the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Culver, Indiana!

The Body of Christ is no mitigating, invisible, helpless Force, as the Protestants teach. Neither is the Body of Christ subject to some puffed-up charade of Papacy, where Popes overreach with usurped Authority to elevate or excommunicate earthly kings.

It’s in the little country Baptist assembly, or the suburban Baptist congregation that meets together with a simple, “I make a motion that we call the church to order for business…”, followed by a “I second that motion!”, then the pastor/moderator says: “The church is now in order for business… What does the church desire to remit or retain? What has the LORD led us to loose or to bind…?”

Praise God, that happens every month, as the LORD works through His Sovereign Bodies scattered throughout this world, at the pleasure of the Supreme Sovereign, the LORD Jesus Christ! Selah! Think about it!

Selah! Think about it!
by Eld.T.Matthew Stepp

Proverbs 9:10/4:7- “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. …Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

As I’ve studied God’s Word for sermons over the years, the Wayne County definition of Wisdom has boiled down to: “Thinking like God”. Selah! Think about it!

So, what would a WISE man do? Surely a WISE man would realize first of all, that he is lost and undone in his natural state.

Nothing in this world can give him Peace from a sense of impending judgment from the Unknown God. The FIRST thing a WISE man would do is Recognize the hypocrisy and deceitfulness of his heart that constantly reassures him that he is “ok”. But the one thing the heart is incapable of, is delivering that peace!

Rom.3:16-18- “Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes.” “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” – Jer.17:9.

The SECOND thing a WISE man would do is to PRAY for Salvation! Jer.29:11-13- “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

A WISE man would turn to the last hope of fallen man! Joel 2:12-13- “Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God…”

Dt.4:29-31- “But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. …if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee…” Selah!

The THIRD thing a WISE man would do is READ the Bible! Ps.119:1-2,7-10- “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

“…I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments. I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee…”

Only in the Bible will any man find the Ability to properly weigh this world and make Prudent Judgments and Righteously Live in a manner pleasing to God, our Creator! The promise of this Wisdom is to those that Read God’s Word…

Ps.19:7,11- “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. …in keeping of them there is great reward.”

The FOURTH thing a WISE man would do is Desire Service in the Kingdom of God! Mt.4:17-19- “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

“And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mt.7:24-27) Build your house upon The Rock…!

The FIFTH thing a WISE man would do is Find the LORD’s Landmark Baptist Church in their community and put their family under the Gospel of Sovereign Grace.

Eph.3:10- “To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,”

Find one like the First Baptist Church of Smyrna! Rev.2:8-10- “And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

“Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

If unmarried, the SIXTH thing a WISE man would do is Pray to God for a WISE woman to share his life with! Prv.31:10-12,30- “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. …Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” Selah!

Let us attain unto True Wisdom and start “Thinking like God would!” That would be WISE…!

Selah! Think about it!
by Eld.T.Matthew Stepp

1Corinthians 15:45- “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”

The Apostle Paul is referencing from Gen.2:7- “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

In the context of this 15th chapter, there is a comparison between the natural and supernatural. Our text verse kinda turns the corner, and reveals the POWER that can generate such a transformation from mortal to immortal that will culminate in the familiar closing verses: 1Cor.15:50-54-

“Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.” Selah! Think about it!

You see, all the first Adam could do was perpetuate the Status Quo. If he had not fallen after Eve, Adam could have perpetuated Life, since he was created a Living Soul…! Even if Adam had rejected the fruit in Eve’s hand, Humanity was doomed! The “Living Soul” could not procreate on his own as he lived on eternally… that would still require a “Quickening Spirit” to either replace or redeem Eve for the remaining upright Adam.

But Adam ate and fell…. Gen.2:17- “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

Once Adam fell into a depraved, dichotomous creature state (no Spirit), he was now only capable of perpetuating Death, as evidenced in Gen.5:1-5- “This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; …And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: …And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.”

And as we read on, Seth died… Enos died… all of Adam’s children died! (…excepting the extraordinary Enoch! …a picture of the coming Raptured saint generation that also will not perish!)

This perpetuating status of the first Adam (man) is even hinted at (awfully) in Gen.3:22- “And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:”

What a miserable existence that would be to LIVE perpetually in a Fallen State! Selah! Think about it!

Simply put, there was no Regenerating Power (quickening) in the Tree of Life, merely the gift of extending existing life. The Quickening “making alive” power can only come through the Second Adam (man), Jesus Christ!

The Apostle in this revealing verse goes beyond Adam’s gift of “living” and shows the Miraculous Power of Jesus Christ, our LORD to GIVE LIFE!

To EMPOWER with LIFE whomsoever He will…! Mt.3:9- “…I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” 2Cor.3:17- “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” …and LIFE!

Jn.6:63- “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh “profiteth” (above and beyond the breaking even) nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” Selah! Think about it!

The Doctrine of Federal Headship is taught in this verse, and ratifies Rom.5:14-15,17- “Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, …For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

“…For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)”

What is meant by this Doctrine, is the essence of the contrast of the Two Adams. We are born sinners because of our Natural Father, Adam, and we are REBORN as pure and holy saints, because of our Adoption by our Heavenly Father, through the Work and Blood of our LORD Jesus Christ!

Jn.17:1-2- “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.” Selah! Think about it!
