As the threat from the COVID 19 pandemic has diminished in Southeast Michigan, public Masses will again be offered at St. Joseph’s, including our regular Sunday Masses. Our area of the state remains a danger zone so precautions must be observed.

Those who are sick or think they may have COVID 19 must not come to church until they have recovered. The elderly with pre-existing conditions are not under any obligation to attend Mass until this dangerous pandemic passes and encouraged to watch livestreamed Masses or the Tridentine Latin Mass DVD from St. Joseph’s Media.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer dispensed a place of worship from the penalties listed in her Executive Orders 2020-11 and 2020-42 #13. On May 7, 2020, USA Today had an article where the U.S. Department of Justice and the Attorney General sided with churches in Mississippi and Virginia regarding having public services. The following public safety guidelines must be observed:

Social distancing: Families should sit in the same pew. There should be six feet of space between other individuals. Chairs will be placed in the side aisles and by the confessional to allow more spacing. Parishioners may also sit in the choir loft.

Face masks must be worn outdoors. Parishioners may wear them indoors.

Confessions will be heard in the cry room.

No food will be served.

Those in the parish social hall must also observe social distancing.

Those receiving Holy Communion must remove their masks. Please be sure to social distance at the Communion rail.

The first parishioners arriving are encouraged to park on the street or the school parking lot. You may drop off and pick up family members in front of the church. Please avoid parking in front of the stop sign or fire hydrant.

Use proper hygiene: wash your hands, use facial tissues, and cover your mouth when coughing.

Even though conditions are not perfect, we are fortunate to have public Masses offered again.
With your cooperation, the COVID 19 pandemic will hopefully soon leave our area.

***IMPORTANT NOTICE: Considering the unprecedented situation in which we currently find ourselves in, His Excellency has directed our churches and chapels to abide by the guidelines issued by the President in order to protect the elderly and those with pre-exisiting conditions from contracting the Corona virus as it can be fatal to them. As Catholics, we have to set a good example to our neighbor by obeying civil authority. It is deemed prudent that we abide by these guidelines not only for the welfare of those most vulnerable, but also that a large number of our faithful avoid mandatory quarantine in the event that even one parishioner should come down with this virus.

Therefore, for the next 15 days, all public Masses will be cancelled; however, the faithful may visit our churches and chapels to pray privately during this time. Also, our priests will add in their Masses an “oratio imperata” under #13 Pro Quacumque Tribulatione found in the back of the Missal for the containment of the virus and the health of our parishioners.

*Collect: “Despise not, O Almighty God, Thy people who cry out in their affliction, but for the glory of Thy name be appeased and help those in trouble. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who livest and reignest in unity with Holy Ghost, world without end. Amen.”

*Secret: “Graciously receive, O Lord, these offerings by which Thou was pleased to be appeased, and by the power of Thy mercy restore us to safety. Through Our Lord….”

*Postcommunion: “Mercifully look down, we beseech Thee, O Lord, upon our tribulation, and turn away from us the wrath of Thy indignation which we have justly deserved. Through Our Lord….”
