These words of Jesus may sound confusing at first. How can the first be last and the last be first?

Jesus was teaching His disciples that God does not measure people the way the world does. We often judge people by their wealth, position, accomplishments, or length of service. God looks at the heart.

Just like he did when he chose David to be king over Israel. Samual looked at the size of his brothers, but God said I look on the heart.

But now in these two chapters there is a Question About Reward.

God is perfectly loving and merciful, but He is also perfectly just. He cannot pretend sin does not matter. He cannot call evil good or simply overlook the guilt of those who have broken His law.

This raises an important question:

How can a just God forgive guilty people and still remain righteous Himself?

It is easy to say, “I know God.” But does the way we live support that claim?

First John 2:4–5 gives us a serious test: genuine faith is revealed not merely by our words, but by our willingness to obey God’s Word.

HOW MUCH TIME DO WE REALLY HAVE?

“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
— Ephesians 5:15–16

There needs to be a healthy sense of urgency in our lives.

But healthy urgency is not the same as living in a constant rush.

Many people spend their days stressed, driven, and running from one task to another. Yet frantic activity is not always productive. Sometimes we are moving fast without asking whether we are moving in the right direction.

Paul gives us two important instructions.

First, walk circumspectly.

That means to walk carefully, thoughtfully, and wisely. Pay attention to your choices. Consider where your path is leading. Do not drift through life assuming there will always be more time to obey God, forgive someone, make things right, or encourage another person.

Second, redeem the time.

Use the opportunities God has placed before you today.

Pray instead of constantly worrying.

Forgive instead of holding on to bitterness.

Encourage someone instead of remaining silent.

Obey God now instead of promising yourself that you will do it later.

Redeeming the time does not mean filling every minute with work. Rest, worship, family, and quiet reflection are not wasted time.

Time is wasted when we spend our lives on things that do not matter while neglecting the things that do.

We do not know how much time we have.

But we do know that today matters.

So do not live frantically.

Live faithfully.

Walk carefully. Choose wisely. Love deeply. Serve faithfully.

Do not merely count your days.

Make your days count.

The Challenge of Overcoming Doubt

“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days” (Daniel 6:10).

It is in times of need and pain that we often turn to God most diligently. Yet, strangely enough, those may also be the very times when doubt troubles us the most.

When life is calm, faith may seem simple. We say we trust God. We believe His promises. We know He is able. But when trouble becomes personal, when the pressure rises, and when the outcome is uncertain, doubt can begin to speak loudly.

Daniel knew this kind of pressure.

Pressure has a way of revealing what we are really trusting in.

When life gets heavy, God’s people are not called to trust more deeply in themselves — but to lean more fully on the God who delivers.

Beyond Conformity

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17

Christianity teaches that real change is possible. In Christ, a person does not have to remain what he once was.

But true change is more than simply adjusting outward behavior.

The Pharisees were serious about obedience, yet Jesus said our righteousness must exceed theirs. Why? Because God is not looking for proud religious performance. He desires a heart that depends on Him.

Obedience matters. Turning from sin matters. But obedience separated from grace can feed pride, harshness, and self-trust.

The change God wants goes deeper than conformity.

To be a “new creation” means we obey as people who have been rescued, forgiven, humbled, and made new by the grace of God.

The Christian life is not less than obedience.

But it is more than conformity.

It is a life of grateful surrender to the God who changes us from within.
