"My kingdom is not from this world. If it were, my followers would be fighting." — Jesus, John 18:36

The kingdom of this world protects itself with force.
God's kingdom doesn't work that way.

It testifies.
It serves.
It tells the truth.
Even when truth gets crucified.

What would it look like to live by that kind of power today?

The crowd chose Barabbas.

A violent revolutionary over a man of peace.
Force over truth.
Power over love.
We shake our heads at them.

But the same choice shows up in our lives every day — in small ways and large ones.

Do we trust that truth wins? Or do we keep hedging our bets on power?

Jesus said:
"Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

Not everyone who knows the right answers.
Not everyone who believes the correct doctrines.
Everyone who belongs to truth — who is oriented toward it, committed to it, willing to live by it even when it costs something.

Do you belong to truth? Or do you just know about it?

Pilate said "I find no case against him."

Three times.

He knew.
He saw it.
He said it out loud.
And then he handed Jesus over.

Knowing what's right and doing what's right are two very different things.

Lent asks us: Where do we know better — and do it anyway?

"What is truth?"

It sounds like a profound philosophical question.

But Pilate didn't ask it because he wanted to know. He asked it because knowing would require him to act.

Sometimes we ask hard questions the same way.

Not because we're seeking. Because asking lets us off the hook.
What question have you been asking — without really wanting the answer?

Jesus stood before Pilate.

Pilate asked: "Are you a king?" Jesus said: "I came into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." Pilate said: "What is truth?"

And walked out without waiting for an answer.

He already knew.

He'd said three times: "I find nothing wrong with this man." He saw clearly. And then he handed Jesus over anyway — because he was more afraid of the crowd than committed to truth.

Today we ask: Are we any different?

This Sunday: The Trial of Truth.
