On Saturday, the New Wineskins committee hosted our two 2026 Grant Recipients, First Baptist Church in Waukesha, and The Crossing Campus Ministry at the University of Wisconsin Madison, for a lunch and mid-point report for the 2026 grant cycle.

First Baptist Waukesha shared how their third year of the CONNECT youth group has grown to include youth from different backgrounds and c***ecting their experiences to the biblical story. Youth have shared their experiences of living in refugee camps as well as being immigrants in the US along with Euro-American youth sharing their stories and seeing themselves in the Exodus narrative. Together, they are growing in faith and understanding and expanding in the community.

The Crossing hosted an interfaith bioethics conference that included religious background in understanding medical care choices. The conference was well attended and participation at The Crossing has increased by Christians as well as people from other faith backgrounds as they engage in this kind of interfaith dialogue.

Both grant recipients will share reports at our Annual Gathering in October.

May we remember those who have served and given their lives in service to this country.
We pray for the day when "nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore" (Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3).

This Memorial Day, we remember those who served this nation with courage, sacrifice, and devotion. We honor those who gave their lives in defense of freedom and whose legacies live on in the families, friends, and communities they loved.

In a world still marked by war, violence, displacement, and division, we pause to grieve not only the losses of the past but also the suffering unfolding across communities and nations today.

As people of faith and conscience, we are called to reject indifference, pray for peace, stand for justice, and work toward a world where human dignity is protected and every life is valued. May remembrance move us beyond celebration into reflection, compassion, and action.

I'm sad to share that Rev. Bonnie Bell passed away after a brief illness.
Arrangements are pending.

Rev. Bonnie Bell was ordained at Underwood Memorial Baptist Church in 1989, and served several United Methodist churches. She was active with our clergy groups, preaching at several of our churches and recently served as a part-time consulting pastor with Community Baptist Church in Honey Creek in 2023-2024. In her retirement she was actively involved at Underwood Memorial Baptist Church until its closing in 2024.

Please keep her family and friends in your prayers. Bonnie was well known in the area among folk music groups, ministers, and activists over the years, participating in the work for peace and justice. She will be missed, and we give thanks to God for her life and service for Jesus Christ.

Please share. There is a Zoom call today (Saturday) at 3pm with the United Methodist Disaster and Recovery Response on how you can help.

Are you looking for a way to help in the wake of this week of intense storms? There are some urgent needs, and our friends in the Wisconsin Conference United Methodist Church offer an ecumenical opportunity! Their emergency response team is hosting a call at 3 pm on Saturday afternoon that is open to all of us. Keep reading.

From UMCOR-Wisconsin's Director of Response & Recovery:
We are beginning to understand the scope of this historical series of storms. We are in need of a collective response to this disaster. Please join us on a 3 pm zoom this Saturday to learn how you/your church can help.

This call will discuss:
-How churches can become involved in helping those through the state when the rains stop,
---How to train a team to help neighbors clean out their basements,
-How individuals and couples can join teams,
-How individuals can train to take survivor calls who need assistance and place the request into a data base, where volunteer helpers can find them.

The UMC Wisconsin Disaster Response & Recovery Services (sponsored by UMCOR) has been actively involved in long-term recovery work in Milwaukee and that effort will continue. We will also continue to provide Disaster Case Management. We must now pivot to a statewide response.

Link to Saturday's 3 pm call in the comments.
