Although the death of Jesus Christ on the cross is significant, if He had failed to rise three days later, we would still be in trouble. To the church of Corinth Paul wrote, “…if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:14) The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are a package deal. The good news is that the tomb was empty Sunday morning, not because someone stole the body or the authorities moved it to a new location. No reason for the empty tomb works, except that He did it! So, Happy Easter!
Sunday morning, we are going to look at the significance of what Christ did by examining what God did with the people of Israel in the Red Sea crossing. There is a direct line between the two. I encourage you to read Exodus 14-15 in preparation for worship.

When you think of Easter what memories come to your mind? For most people it is Easter baskets with chocolate bunnies, jellybean eggs, and of course, peeps laying on a bed of varied colored plastic straw. I remember coloring eggs with my mom and later hunting for candied ones that were hidden throughout the house. This past Tuesday Jean and I went to Costco and were overwhelmed by the secular version of Easter. They even had a 2- or 3-foot chocolate bunny that cost close to $200! I drooled a bit.

Fortunately, I had parents who helped me understand that Easter was much more than bunnies and candies. I learned early on that it was about the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who came to pay for my sins. Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem came at great cost.

I also learned as a child about the strange tradition of Passover and how a death angel visited the land of Egypt, but it seemed foreign to me. Passover must have seemed strange to the people of Israel when Moses told them what they must do. Think about it. They had NO idea what it meant. They were just told they must obey or pay. Blood on door posts?

We know the whole story but still it is easy to forget. It’s down the list from Christmas. But we MUST remember, and that we will do starting this Sunday. We are going to go way back to the foreshadowing of Easter in Exodus 12. Just one chapter to read for Sunday. Pray and then read in preparation for worship. It is packed with application for modern-day followers of Jesus.

Should Christians give a hoot about Israel and God’s covenant promise to them? We left off last week with Moses barefoot and with his face buried in his hands before a burning bush. Why? God decided it was time for them to meet and He does so in a rather dramatic fashion. Meeting up for coffee and donuts wouldn’t do. God has a mission and He plans to use Moses as part of His plan. The mission? To break the Jewish people from the clutches of Pharoah and deliver them to a land promised to them by a one-way covenant God made to Abraham some 400 years ago. The Jewish people were to be a blessing to the world. It was an everlasting covenant too. No take backs.
Twice God explained to Moses that the land is infested with at least six nations and that they must go. Did God have the right to expel these nations? What about national sovereignty? Is God’s covenant promise still valid today for modern-day Israel…they are quite secular. Should we care? Should we give a hoot?
I (Pastor Bob) encourage you to read Genesis 11:1-9, Exodus 3-4, Acts 17:24-27 and if you have time, Romans 9-11 in preparation for Sunday worship.

The predominant mantra in our age of personal self-fulfillment is
“know yourself.” Movies, songs, blog casters, and the like are all-to-willing to help you find you, mainly by looking within. This may be the main reason narcissism is spreading like wildfire. The message of the Bible is quite different. Simply put it is, “Know God and you will know yourself.” It is impossible to get an accurate understanding of ourselves apart from God, for we are created in His image. Starting in Exodus 2:23 and then on through chapter 4 God takes Moses (and us) to school on who He is and who we are in comparison. Smart people pause to look at the glory of God. I encourage you to read Exodus 2:23-25, and then chapters 3 and 4 in preparation for worship.
