Nmégwzé gizes – Lake Trout Moon

In August, many of the St. Joseph Potawatomi moved closer to the Lake Michigan shores to fish for nmégwzé gizes, or lake trout. Lake trout was a vital food source they relied on during this time.

Hi Folks,

As many of you know I work on environmental justice issues regionally and nationally. One of the areas where that work is being done is around remediation. With climate change already beginning to manifest with heat like we have now, how do we stay safe? How do we stay cool.

I've asked Dena to post these two infographics at the church. You may want to post them where you are just to make sure everyone is safe. If your body is responding to the heat, please use some of these recommendations. You are a beloved Child of God and so important to this community of faith.

Finally, if you need a cool spot, we can make the church available to you for that. Just let us know.

July is known as Nibnë Gizes, the Plentiful Moon. Our word for summer, niben, also means plentiful — a reminder that this is a time of abundance, when the land provides all that, we need.
