Saving and Restoring the Roche de Boeuf Bridge is the unapologetic goal here.
Watervilles sense of community and history are valued by all and the bridge is a large part of that. We need to preserve the bridge because we do not want to lose the things that make Waterville what it is. Historical sites and events connect us to the past and give us a sense of meaning and purpose to move forward into the future. But meaning and purpose are intangible and so if a community of people are not careful they can lose those things that ground us and become untethered from that sense of community and meaning that makes where we are "Home".
The Bridges history and its beauty provide a major grounding point for the residents of Waterville and Grand Rapids. A place to enjoy and remember a simpler time and yet a very productive time. A time when things that were built to be productive also needed to be beautiful. Development can be important for the growth of a community but development without a sense of beauty is cold and brittle.
The reason why Roche de Boeuf is in so many graduation pictures and Wedding pictures and Social Media Profile Pictures is that there is more to development than function. Something as beautiful as our bridge needs to be preserved for generations to come because it creates all of the intangible value that will glue Waterville together for generations to come. Its not just a bunch of cement and brick. Its a large part of what makes Waterville what it is. A beautiful midwest river community. Help us keep it that way.
