Kelly Sackheim plans to share Haiku written by our members related to the Hymns we'll sing. If you would like to request a hymn and share your Haiku, please email [email protected] no later than next Tuesday, August 18, so that we can share in the Weekly Post which hymns will be sung, and individuals can think about a Haiku they would like to share (related to the hymns, or not!)
Haiku is a Japanese poetry form that does not need to rhyme, but is structured to have 3 lines, with each line having a specific number of syllables: 5 - 7 - 5

Eleanor Allen: Wanting Memories
In Buddhist thought, happiness requires us to be present in the moment. Dwelling on the past causes us to lose touch with the present and can only lead to unhappiness. But maybe it’s not cut and dried; maybe there’s a positive role our memories play in our present lives.
Think about a favorite memory you’re willing to share with the rest of us. It can be funny, serious, seemingly insignificant at the time - or a major event in your life. We’ll go around the circle and those who are willing to do so, will briefly share a memory, and tell why you chose that memory. Then we’ll go around a second time to reflect on the role memories play in our lives. For example, do memories of people who are no longer around help process loss? Do your memories give you a better understanding of things that happened in the past? Or a better understanding of complicated relationships? Does thinking about your favorite memories help you realize what’s important to you now? Or do your memories lead you to dwell in the past and make you less happy now?

Tom LaClair, our guest speaker, will talk about the spiritual side of genealogy. Researching and finding our family ancestors makes us feel like we belong to a long line of people. At the same time, learning where we came from helps us understand who we are today. In genealogy, uncovering old stories gives our lives a deeper meaning and purpose. The family history and related connections help us remember those who came before us and acts as a quiet, personal act of respect.
