First Parish of Watertown

First Parish of Watertown The First Parish of Watertown is a Unitarian Universalist congregation founded in 1630. The congregation values the unique contributions of each of its members.

The First Parish of Watertown is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. Worship services are held every Sunday morning at 10:30 am from September to June. Lay-led services are held during the summer months. Children remain with their families for the beginning of most worship services. After that, they are invited to attend age-appropriate Religious Education classes.

Worship is synchronously on Zoom. The First Parish of Watertown offers a variety of programs to respond to individual spiritual needs. In addition, our Social Action Committee creates learning and donation opportunities for a variety of local social service organizations. Information about all of our programs is printed in our weekly e-newsletter, called the Arbella. The First Parish of Watertown is a Welcoming Congregation. We invite and encourage the full participation of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, in every aspect of congregational activity. First Parish is located at 35 Church Street in Watertown Square. The building has a ramp and an elevator for mobility assistance.

“The Necessity of the Bridge," Rev. Kyle M. Belmont

This Bridging Sunday service is for all ages and will specifically focus on our shared value of transformation. Our service will feature music shared by some of our youngest, and will invite all gathered to participate in a bridging ritual. Through the ritual of bridging we will be asked to consider the various threshold moments that appear in our shared lives.

If you would like the Zoom link to dial in, please email [email protected] before 12 o’clock noon on Friday.

Self-Defense Seminar!
Learn Practical Jiu-Jitsu Techniques
Jiu-Jitsu is a practical self-defense-focused martial art that emphasizes techniques people of any size can use to protect themselves.
When: Sunday, June 7th | 1:00-2:00 p.m.
Where: FPW Social Hall (Downstairs)
FPW member Justin Gordon, certified Japanese Jiu-Jitsu instructor and second-degree black belt, offers a free beginner-friendly seminar. Discover practical self-defense techniques accessible to everyone!
“What I love most about teaching martial arts is seeing how it builds confidence and resilience. While self-defense skills are practical, the deeper lesson I’ve found is that they are rooted in self-respect and care for oneself--in other words, love. In a difficult situation, the strength to protect yourself often comes from loving yourself more than the hate of the attacker. In that sense, the values behind this training feel very aligned with the spirit of our FPW community.”

“This Great Pull,” Rev. Sophia Lyons

This Sunday we will hear about the ways that some indigenous cultures ritualize community healing and conflict resolution when hurt or misunderstanding descend. Let’s consider how wisdom teachings such as these might speak to our own treasured Unitarian Universalist beliefs and values!

Our sacred circle is made stronger because of you–come to church and take your place in it. See you Sunday!

“Why We Come to Church,” Rev. Sophia Lyons

As we continue to work with May’s theme of ‘ritual’ we will consider the many rituals we engage in as Unitarian Universalists, and as friends and members of First Parish. We might ask ourselves: what’s the story beneath some of our treasured rituals? and why do we do them? If you are seeking for renewal, meaning, and the genuine love of a community, then slow down and worship with us this Sunday!

If you are interested in the Zoom link for the service, please email [email protected] before Friday noon ET.

“Entering the Great Pure Ocean,” with Sensei Morris Sullivan and Rev. Sophia Lyons

As Unitarian Universalists we believe that there are a myriad ways to touch fingers with the Divine. This Sunday let’s look to the Buddhist tradition as we come together to celebrate the Buddha’s birthday, otherwise known as Vesak! We will reflect on Buddhist teachings that will help to open our hearts and fill us with spiritual peace, as well as partake in a beautiful communal ritual together. You are not going to want to miss this special worship service!
