Today we begin looking at what we call Zechariah's Night Visions. These visions are what we sometimes call apocalyptic visions. However, in biblical terms we use the word apocalypse quite differently than we do commonly. Join us as we start to look at the unique features of this prophetic style, understand how they applied to the original audience, and finally see how we are blessed by this apocalyptic vision of the coming Messiah.

Pound for pound Zechariah may be the most messianically focused of the biblical prophets. Throughout his book he continually encourages the remnant of Judah to look forward to the coming Messiah and the blessings that accompany Him. However, before blessings can come the people need to repent of their sins. As we'll see the encouragement of the prophet to an ancient people is just as applicable to us today. We too must repent, that is turn back from our sins, before we can experience the blessings of the Messiah as well.

In Galatians the Apostle Paul tells us that "For freedom Christ has set you free." This is great news indeed. As as a nation, when we declared our freedom from England and the freedom to govern ourselves. Likewise we as Christians have also been set free from something and to something else. The questions then arise, what have we been set free from? What have we been set free to do? What does that freedom look like? And if we don't yet have that freedom, how do we get it?

After a significant amount of travel recently I found myself with a couple of burdens. One regarding the world and the other regarding the church. The first is satisfied by fulfilling the Great Commission of bringing Christ to the lost of the world. And the second is fulfilled by keeping Scripture at the forefront of our worship services. Today we come to the conclusion of the Haggai's prophecies. In his final prophetic message we see a distinct tone change in Haggai. No longer is he trying to correct problems with people of Judah. Now he is only proclaiming a blessing on Judah's governor Zerubbabel. However, even though these blessings were spoken to a man who has been dead for over two millennia, their fulfillment is still very much applicable to us.

Thus far in Haggai the prophet has confronted the people with regards to problems with their priorities and perseverance. Now Haggai will confront them with regards to a problem with their personal lives. The people had begun the good work of rebuilding the temple but there was still a problem. Because of personal sin these people were defiling the good work that they had been called to do. He does this by pointing out that holiness is not transmitted to them, but defilement is transferred to their work. This message to these people is just as important to us today.

In Haggai 1 the prophet confronts the people over a problem with their priorities. In Haggai 2:1-9 he confronts them with a problem with their perseverance. They've started the good work of rebuilding the temple but almost immediately they are in danger of stalling out. Many of the older people remember the fading glory of Solomon's temple. Now they can't possibly see how the pile of rubble before them can ever be as great as that. They've fallen victim to the folly of old men everywhere, they remember the "good old days." This folly is especially dangerous to us in the modern American church. However, the encouragement the prophet offers the people of Judah can be of great help to us in the church today.

In Haggai 1 the prophet confronts the people over a problem with their priorities. In Haggai 2:1-9 he confronts them with a problem with their perseverance....
