Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, "Once you can accept the Universe as being something expanding into an infinite nothing which is something, wearing stripes with plaid is easy."

I am skeptical that something which might be called a conscious being made the decision "Ok, NOW!" to push the button, so to speak, and set off the Big Bang.

Fast forward billions of years and there are now, we are told, so many galaxies that, if each was the size of a cheerio, they would fill over a hundred Olympic swimming pools.[*]

It has not been given to me to believe that one Creator — of just Life on Earth, let alone of the entire Universe – keeps track of all life here, let alone determines everything that happens here and every act of every human being.

I think the Creator, however named, gave each of us physical and spiritual life and intelligence, and enough holiness, love and courage, to do our respective parts in the stewardship of Life on earth. As daunting as that responsibility may be, we can each do our best to seek, and to do, what love calls us to do moment to moment.

Spoken in Meeting for Worship August 16, 2026

Today I am hearing a message about what early Friends called a daily period of retirement.

The apostle Paul had a direct experience of the resurrected Christ on the road to Damascus. He had a vision of a blinding light and heard God’s voice.

We have our own experiences of the divine in peak experiences — profound experiences in nature, witnessing the birth of a child or the death of a loved one, an encounter with a glorious work of art.

But Paul also experienced terrible things — guilt over his complicity in the stoning of another disciple, beatings and floggings, shipwrecks, imprisonment.

And we also go through valleys, sufferings of our own.

Paul did not stop his work; he prayed. He said to pray continuously. In Eastern traditions practitioners meditate daily. Twelve step programs say to have daily conscious contact with the God of our understanding.

So we are invited to daily retirement. For some of us this is already happening, it’s something we do. For others that may not be the case, but something we’d like to do.

There is no failure. Only trying…and learning…and growing.

Billions of people of faith around the world are, like us, doing the best they can see to do to care for their communities; to keep their loved ones and neighbors healthy, safe, at peace.

There are many different faiths - and many people who believe that there is no God or Creative Power, however named, other than the laws of nature. And it is natural for people to want to be right about, and defend, their beliefs and those who share their beliefs. This tendency has for millennia, and still today, created countless us-versus-them conflicts, from the small and personal to the global and catastrophic.

Imagine if billions of people each lived by two fundamental human commandments or principles - thus setting an example for others: love YOUR God or Creative Power, as you believe or have experienced It to exist, and love others, whatever their beliefs, as you love yourself.
