What does it really mean to experience the abundant life Jesus offers?

This Sunday, we continued our series by looking at one of Jesus’ most powerful statements: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

Following Jesus is more than simply adding Him into our lives. It’s choosing to give our lives fully to Him and discovering that the life He offers is so much more than simply going through the motions.

Jesus came so that we could have life, and have it abundantly.

If you missed Sunday’s message, we’d love for you to watch! We experienced a few technical difficulties with our livestream, but the full sermon is available on the Northside YouTube channel.

Few statements from Jesus are as bold as the words He shared at the Last Supper: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

Jesus truly is the way. The only way. Millions of people have discovered that following the way of Jesus is the best way to live. He is the full embodiment of truth, and He offers abundant life to everyone who follows Him.

This Sunday, we’ll take a closer look at this powerful statement, including the ending of the verse that is often harder to hear: “No one comes to the Father except through me.”

On Sunday, we continued our series, Shocking Things Jesus Said, with a challenging statement from Jesus in Luke 12: “I have come to divide people against each other!”

At first, those words may not sound like Jesus—but they are. Following Jesus requires a choice: to follow Him or to follow the world.

The Gospel can bring division, not because Christians are called to be divisive, but because choosing to follow Jesus can separate us from those who choose a different path. Sometimes that division can even happen within families.

Following Jesus is not always an easy choice, but the rewards of following Him are worth it.

Jesus said something in Luke 12 that may sound surprising:
“Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other!”

But isn’t Jesus the Prince of Peace? And don’t we celebrate Him as the One who brings peace?

This Sunday, we’ll take a closer look at what Jesus meant and the kind of peace He truly came to bring.

Romans 5:1 reminds us, “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.”

Jesus taught that God must come first in every area of life. While believers may agree on what that looks like in many areas, there are also times when putting God first will look different from person to person.

God may give certain convictions to one believer that He does not give to another. Those personal convictions should not be forced on others. Doing so can cause unnecessary division and harm within the Body of Christ.

When differences arise in how others seek to put Jesus first, the response should be grace rather than judgment or shame.

HATE IS A STRONG WORD!

Listen to these shocking words from Jesus in Luke 14:26 NIV:

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.”

Did Jesus really mean that we should hate our families—or even ourselves? Everywhere else, Jesus teaches us to love others, including those who mistreat us.

Jesus is not telling us to hate our family, ourselves, or anyone else. The Greek word translated as “hate” can also carry the idea of loving less. Jesus is teaching that our love and commitment to Him must come before our love and commitment to anyone or anything else.

Join us this Sunday as we take a closer look at this challenging passage and what it means for our lives today.
