The Sabbath Still
The steeple stands in silver light, A ghost against the morning white. Where heavy drifts have climbed the stair. And silenced every bell and prayer.
The pews are cold, the aisles are deep, in shadows where the echoes sleep. The stained glass glows with winter’s frost, in intricate patterns, etched and lost.
The eight o’clock has slipped away. Beneath the clouds of leaden gray; The five o’clock is quiet, too, as drifts of white begin to brew.
But though the doors are locked and still. The Spirit roams the snowy hill.
At ten-thirty, we’ll gather near. Through glowing screens, the Word to hear.
No matter that we’re far apart. We’ll join in prayer with every heart; The livestream light will bridge the way To keep the Morning Prayer on Sunday.
So light a candle, pour the tea, In quiet, prayerful company. The sanctuary isn't stone. But lives in hearts, and there alone.
