Freedom Remembered: A Juneteenth Commemoration
Join us at First Presbyterian Church of Washington as we honor a significant moment in our community's history.
On January 3, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was read in Washington following instructions that it be proclaimed from the seat of local government. Because Washington's City Hall had been destroyed during the Civil War, Union Army officials selected First Presbyterian Church, located beside City Hall, as the site for this historic reading.
To commemorate this event, historian Leesa Jones of the Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum will present a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation from the church steps.
