Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

There are certain moments in history that become permanently engraved upon our memory. When an event is sufficiently monumental, tragic, or earth-shattering, we remember not only the event itself, but where we were and what we were doing when we first heard the news. Those old enough to remember the assassination of President John F. Kennedy can often describe precisely where they were and what they were doing the moment they learned that the President had been killed.

For a later generation of Americans, September 11, 2001, is such a day. Those of us who were old enough to comprehend what was happening remember where we were when we heard that an airplane had struck the World Trade Center in New York City. We then watched with disbelief as a second plane struck the South Tower and it became clear that this was no accident. We remember the terrible images from the Pentagon, struck by a third hijacked airplane, and the news of yet a fourth aircraft crashing into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the almost unimaginable sight of the Twin Towers collapsing. Twenty-five years have elapsed since that day and yet the chilling images remain etched in our minds.

Дорогі брати і сестри у Христі!

Є моменти в історії, які назавжди закарбовуються в нашій пам’яті. Коли стається щось справді масштабне, трагічне чи приголомшливе, ми пам’ятаємо не лише саму подію, але й те, де перебували та що робили, коли вперше почули про неї. Люди, які пам’ятають убивство президента Джона Ф. Кеннеді, часто можуть точно розповісти, де вони були і що робили тієї миті, коли дізналися, що президента вбито.

Для наступного покоління американців таким днем стало 11 вересня 2001 року. Ті з нас, хто був достатньо дорослим, щоб усвідомити те, що відбувалося, пам’ятають, де перебували, коли почули, що літак врізався у Всесвітній торговий центр у Нью-Йорку. Ми не могли повірити своїм очам, коли другий літак врізався в Південну вежу, і стало зрозуміло, що це не випадковість. Ми пам’ятаємо жахливі кадри з Пентагону, який атакував третій захоплений літак, звістку про четвертий літак, який розбився у полі поблизу Шанксвілла в Пенсильванії, а також болісне видовище, коли впали вежі-близнюки. Відтоді минуло двадцять п’ять років, однак ці моторошні кадри й досі в нашій пам’яті.

Please join us for a special Sunday spiritual retreat, hosted by our Knights of Columbus St. Josaphat Council 7530 (DC Knights of Columbus), featuring Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, MC of the Mother Teresa Institute. The retreat will run 2 hours, starting at 12 noon, on September 20, 2026. Registrants are welcome to join a light luncheon following the 10:00am Divine Liturgy. Details are in the attached flier.

🌿 Beginning of the Liturgical Year

Today, September 1, we begin a new liturgical year in the Eastern Christian tradition.

Unlike the civil calendar, the Church year begins on September 1 and continues through August 31. It invites us to journey once again through the great feasts and seasons of the Church, contemplating the mystery of Christ and growing in faith throughout the year.

As we begin this new cycle, may we open our hearts to God’s grace and entrust the year ahead to Him. 🙏

📖 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

May this new liturgical year be a time of renewed faith, prayer, and hope for all. 🌿

Сьогодні, 1 вересня, у східнохристиянській традиції розпочинається новий літургійний рік.

На відміну від цивільного календаря, церковний рік починається 1 вересня і триває до 31 серпня. Він запрошує нас знову пройти шляхом великих свят і періодів церковного року, споглядаючи таїнство Христа та зростаючи у вірі.

Розпочинаючи цей новий цикл, відкриймо наші серця на Божу благодать і довірмо Господеві рік, що попереду. 🙏
