The Committee’s mission is to provide opportunities for caring for God’s holy creation through action and education. Welcome to our parish’s Environmental Committee Community Page! All are welcome to participate, whether you are a parishioner or not. Columba's Church has been a beacon in Washington, DC since 1875, and is a Christian community in the Anglican Tradition of hospitality to people of m

any theological perspectives. More information about the life of our parish can be found at our website: www.columba.org

We seek to preserve, restore and enjoy the planet, to live ecologically, sanely and simply, both as individuals and a church body, and to promote awareness of global and local environmental issues. The Committee serves as an incubator to support the ministry of parishioners in helping and healing the world God lovingly created. The purpose for this Community Page is to share information. C's Environment Committee members (again anyone is welcome - all you have to do is just jump in) and our congregation. Issues, news, events, conferences and other items are all appropriate for posting. When you post, we ask you to keep in mind an environmental focus and a positive contribution to the conversation. We care deeply about the community that surrounds the Chesapeake region as well as global environmental matters.

Sara Via spoke to us about sustainable landscaping and ways to create a climate-friendly yard. Professor Via is an entomologist at the University of Maryland College Park and maintains a web site called The Climate Corner. https://climatecorner.org/ She managed to cram a one-hour presentation into half that time, but I recommend the full-length version, which can be found here. https://umd.zoom.us/rec/play/jbmqn0w4ogCJ9c2WP7fiI2RFsqvj_nXcmbDx4vrf1UgRmIc7EnGjcYDxyQLqUB7ktZCD-D2XJVGBWC8.9D8FjpUIoPQqp1P8?startTime=1594840614000&_x_zm_rtaid=jMuCQwS2RMme42PzrYTGUg.1654142519951.93cd1b8d9ddaebe7d7f76fa6d572f708&_x_zm_rhtaid=467 My favorite bit of her advice: Don’t strive for the perfect weed-free lawn – if it’s green, mow it!

Jeanne Braha of Rock Creek Conservancy https://www.rockcreekconservancy.org/ spoke at a forum about water and watershed issues in our area, focusing on Rock Creek, of course, but also the Little Falls Branch of the Potomac – which is where the water from St. Columba’s flows! (Specifically, the Dalecarlia tributary – shown on this EPA map https://mywaterway.epa.gov/community) Unfortunately, this forum was not recorded, but here is Jeanne’s excellent presentation. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1o5A-V9C8rE1WFrMZTUdBC-Jb5b0cmC0V/edit =id.p1 You can also see a presentation about the Little Falls Watershed Alliance here. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1m1f8phEod1-BGoeLZgiacqwR8oWQwqGT/edit =id.p1

John Nolan will also join the tour to share information about plans for the front lawn, and Thelma Triche will share information about "Zero Waste" now that the church has re-opened.

We will gather in the Common about 12:15 on December 5th (after the 11:15 service). The tour will be over about 1:00. Hope to see you then!

Abbott McCartney, a parishioner at St. John's, Lafayette Square, is a member of the Diocese’s Southern Africa Link Committee, which seeks to foster closer links between the Diocese and the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, a leader within the worldwide Anglican Communion around the issue of creation care. The Committee worked with Carol Janus, the late Chair of our Environmental Network, to bring forward a successful resolution at the 2019 Diocesan Convention supporting the use of Season of Creation liturgies throughout the Diocese annually during October.

As another step to bring the two communities together, Abbott has arranged a virtual conversation with the Rev. Canon Dr. Rachel Mash, the Environmental Coordinator for the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, on Wednesday, Apr. 14, at noon. Dr. Mash, who is active internationally in Christian and interfaith dialogues relating to the care of God's creation, will discuss "How to prepare for Earth Day in the midst of the Covid pandemic." Here's the address for the Zoom meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81255427221?pwd=bHF6M3BQemNLQWw5Tms0bXFubGphQT09
