Catholic Art Institute

Catholic Art Institute Our mission is realized through conferences, workshops, retreats, exhibitions, &more Today our cultural heritage of beauty is threatened.

We are a 501c3 non profit arts organization working to support excellence in the Catholic arts, to evangelize the culture through beauty, & restore beauty to the liturgy. The Catholic Art Institute is an arts organization working to restore a culture of truth, beauty, and goodness. We empower artists to use their gifts to glorify God and captivate souls through beauty. The Catholic Art Institute r

ecognizes the essential need for beauty to elevate our senses and illuminate our souls. We believe that churches, as images of Heaven on earth, should be adorned and designed by artists and architects pursuing the utmost excellence in their craft. Our mission is implemented through diverse educational programming, community building, and, all-importantly, the prayers of the faithful and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Catholic Art Guild hosts the top scholars, artists, architects, philosophers, and theologians of our day for educational events. Through our speaker series, workshops in traditional art-making techniques, and our annual conference, we provide preeminent education, resources, and inspiration to all those interested in the elevation of the visual arts. Great art is made, and culture is changed through community; with this in mind, our events foster dialogue and provide networking opportunities for professionals and aspiring professionals alike. Within academia, in major art institutions, in our culture at large, and regrettable, within the Church itself, traditional standards of beauty are often seen as irrelevant or are directly attacked. The Catholic Art Institute offers a community of mutual support to those working to uphold the value of beauty and revivify the arts. If you would like to help with our mission or participate in a community focused on restoring beauty to the culture and Catholic arts, please consider joining us by becoming a patron or member.

Step into centuries of Christian beauty with us on Sunday, June 7 at 2:00 PM for a special Christian Art Tour at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, led by distinguished Catholic art historian Mary Elizabeth Podles.

The Walters is one of Baltimore’s lesser-known treasures, housing an extraordinary collection of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Christian art — from luminous panel paintings and icons to sculpture, manuscripts, and sacred objects of exceptional craftsmanship. Together we’ll encounter works that reveal how beauty has long served as a path to contemplation, devotion, and truth.

Mary Elizabeth Podles brings a remarkable depth of knowledge to this experience. A former Curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art at the Walters, with prior roles at The Met, the National Gallery of Art, and Sotheby’s, she has spent a lifetime helping others discover the riches of Christian art and culture.

Spaces are filling quickly. If you’ve been considering joining us, don’t wait too long. These tours sell out quickly.

The artwork above the entrance of the Archdiocese of the Military Chapel was designed and produced by artists in our studio. The paintings of St. George and St. John 23rd honor the military virtues of bravery and mercy. The beautiful completed designs are pictured here.

Today the Church celebrates St. Bernardine of Siena (1380–1444), the great Franciscan preacher known as the “Apostle of Italy.” Orphaned at a young age and later serving the sick during times of plague, St. Bernardine spent his life calling souls back to Christ with extraordinary zeal, charity, and courage. His preaching drew crowds of thousands and helped reconcile cities divided by conflict and unrest.

He is perhaps best remembered for spreading devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. Holding aloft the radiant IHS Christogram—the sacred monogram of Our Lord’s Name—he urged people to place Christ once again at the center of their lives. Through his preaching, the symbol spread throughout churches, homes, and public buildings across Europe and remains one of the most recognizable Christograms in Christian art today.

Pictured here is Saint Bernardine of Siena, a beautiful 15th-century tempera panel by Sano di Pietro, housed today in the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana in Siena, Italy. The work presents the saint with characteristic Sienese elegance and restraint: clothed in the humble Franciscan habit, suspended by angels against a luminous field of lapis blue and gold, bearing the Holy Name that became the mission of his life.

St. Bernardine is the patron saint of advertisers, communications and public relations professionals, and those struggling with gambling addictions. He is also invoked for chest and respiratory illnesses. Interestingly, this patronage may stem from his own physical suffering: Bernardine endured a weak and impaired voice for years and was once thought unsuited to preaching. Yet through perseverance, prayer, and grace, he eventually became one of the most powerful preachers of the 15th century.

In an age filled with noise and division, his witness remains deeply relevant: true renewal begins not with slogans or power, but with reverence for Christ and the courage to proclaim His Name.

St. Bernardine of Siena, pray for us.
