The document also rightly criticizes surrogacy, s*xual violence, exploitation, and po*******hy. None of these are compatible with human dignity, which we are all called to defend!

In Christian marriage, Jesus invites husband and wife to receive His blessing, which will help them flourish. But Christ’s blessing is not “magic”—husband and wife must cooperate with Him! For example, when spouses respect God’s plan for married love and the gift of life by rejecting contraception and instead using the methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP), they will face real work. They will have to change their behavior and, indeed, their hearts to conform to God’s plan for married love and the gift of life. Learning about how God created human fertility, marriage, and the marital relationship may take some work for the husband and wife. If they persevere, however, husband and wife will discover their “one flesh” and one heart vocation as God intended!

God made the marital embrace as a spousal gift with a two-fold purpose; to draw the spouses closer together—to be unitive (a communion of persons), and to be procreative—life-giving (which can bring new life into the world). The truth is that husband and wife are called by God to respect this reality because their relationship has the responsibility to care for the powers of love and life.

Given this reality, contraception and sterilization are not a good choice. They harm God’s gift of fertility. Only the methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP) support God’s gifts of love and life in marriage. That is because NFP education helps husband and wife understand and respect their combined fertility. With that information, and prayerfully, they can discern when God is calling them to attempt a new pregnancy or not. When they understand that “now is not the time,” they abstain from the conjugal embrace to respect God’s gifts.

Human s*xuality carries within it the two-fold powers of love and life—it has a “nuptial” meaning. Human s*xuality is lived in its fullest in the marriage between one man and one woman.

In order to become good stewards of God’s gifts of love and life, married couples can use the methods of Natural Family Planning (NFP) to honor God’s design.

The methods of NFP are authentic family planning—they can be used to attempt conception or postpone it. Nothing is done to harm or reject God’s gifts!
