Seekers Church

Seekers Church Seekers Church is a diverse, progressive, and affirming family of faith working for peace and justice. Once we hear it, the call may seem overwhelming.

We believe God calls each person to a place of need in the world. This call to love and co-create may take root in workplace, community, family, or nature. It may appear as art, dance, advocacy, housing, childcare, music, peacemaking, storytelling. But as we find support from each other in our spiritual journeys, we can dare to say “Yes!” to impossible undertakings, to fully imagining and living

our unique and precious lives. Our youngest member is six, our oldest 92. Women and men share equally in servant leadership, creating worship and celebrations, maintaining our building, and all other tasks. We welcome and celebrate people of all races, sexual and gender orientations, beliefs, and cultures. We are a Christian church whose members’ spirituality and theologies range broadly. At the heart of the Seekers community are small, committed groups that support the life and goals of the church and each participant. In these groups, members share more intimately their joys and struggles, practice common spiritual disciplines, and find spiritual accountability. We offer an open pulpit and shared leadership, rather than have one minister lead us. Different members of Seekers and others – including friends of other faiths – bring reflections on how God is present in the struggle for justice, climate change, embodiment, grief, animal rights, chaos, darkness, or joy. We may be invited to perform a ritual or dance. We are always surprised and often delighted. We laugh a lot and at times are moved to tears.

Please join us for a May Day Strong special version of our six year old vigil for social justice. Since four days after the murder of George Floyd in 2020, most Friday afternoons from 5 to 6 we’ve stood on the sidewalk in front of our church in Takoma, DC with signs promoting social justice and encouraging voting. Our sidewalk is across from Takoma, DC metro at a very busy intersection of bus, car and pedestrian traffic. We get a lot of encouragement from those who pass in front of us. We have lots of signs to share but encourage you to bring your own if you join us. We’ll have lively music, plenty of water, snacks and access to bathrooms. Red line metro is across the street including the metro parking lot for drivers. Many bus routes include this area, with stops nearby. Wear your favorite protest costume, shirt, hat, button. . .

This year for our front window creche scene, Seekers Church chose to represent the Christ child in solidarity with those living in the destruction and devastation of Gaza. Setting the baby amidst the rubble highlights Jesus’s message of standing with those who are victims of oppression and bringing light in the midst of the darkest darkness. Read more about Christ in the Rubble in this sermon from Sallie Holmes and Lucy Slater https://www.seekerschurch.org/christ-in-the-rubble-by-sallie-holmes-and-lucy-slater/
and the peace and justice prayer by David Lloyd that preceded it https://www.seekerschurch.org/a-prayer-for-the-people-of-palestine-and-gaza-and-so-many-others/

Part 1 (Jeanne Marcus)
Good morning! I suspect that, seeing Ellie and me up here together, it may have occurred to you that the word we’re bringing could have something to do with September 14. Yes?
And yes, we will indeed talk about the Day of Prayer and Conversation, but we want to highlight that “September 14” is not just the date that we all met out at Wellspring under a brilliant blue sky, with old oak trees joining us by tossing down a super-abundance of celebratory acorns on us whenever we walked abroad.

September 14 has been all along, and still is an exceptional lively point in an entire VISION-LED PROCESS. Who knows how best to locate the beginning of this VISION and PROCESS? There’s a strong argument for its beginning with the explorations around leadership that Seekers did in 2022.

Most of you know me as a member of the REJMT. Usually, when I come up here, it is to talk about reparations – or to call us to some action in solidarity with Apache Stronghold. You might have thought, for the sake of consistency, that I would be a member of the Eyes to See mission group. But in actual fact, I am a member of the Earth and Spirit mission group. You might be wondering why I was called to that mission group, and to be honest, for the past few years, I have been wondering as well.
Bear with me, as I dive into a bit of personal history here to help explain that journey. I came into Seekers brand new to, and somewhat evangelical about a movement I am part of, called Breaths Together for Change.

The Feast of the Reign of Christ
The past month has been very powerful for me. In the aftermath of spending the day with Seekers on Sunday, September 14 I flew into Albuquerque on October 24 to experience a weekend with eleven hundred people who, like us are Re-Imaging Christianity. We were told 2,000 people joined us on-line from around the world. I returned and read the Weave Team’s story? They used the term evolution. This caused me to listen with the heart of a visionary.
Will you pray with me:
Holy One, please ignite our spirits, my spirit for an outpouring of love into this day and into this worship service. May I have the confidence to believe your Spirit, the Holy Spirit is here. Holy One, even if words can’t express your presence may our hearts and minds breathe in your love. Please allow the billows of our lungs to expand the seeds of faith, compassion, patience and openness that comes with this worship time together.
