STABAT MATER DOLOROSA
At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to her Son to the last. Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
all His bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword has passed. O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest,
of the sole-begotten One. Chri

st above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ’s dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother’s pain untold? For the sins of His own nation,
She saw Jesus wracked with torment,
All with scourges rent:

She beheld her tender Child,
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent. Touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord:

Make me feel as thou hast felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ my Lord. pierce me through,
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified:

Let me share with thee His pain,
who for all my sins was slain,
who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live:

By the Cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins blest!,
Listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine;

Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine. Wounded with His every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned,
in His very Blood away;

Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
lest in flames I burn and die,
in His awful Judgment Day. Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
by Thy Mother my defense,
by Thy Cross my victory;

When my body dies,
let my soul be granted
the glory of Paradise.

Diary of St Maria Faustyna Kowalska
Notebook 6: 1626-1627

1626 The Lord said to me, 'I am taking you into My school for the whole of Lent. I want to teach you how to suffer.' I answered, "With You, Lord, I am ready for everything." And I heard a voice, 'You are allowed to drink from the cup from which I drink. I give you that exclusive privilege today...'

1627 Today I felt the Passion of Jesus in my whole body, and the Lord gave me knowledge of the conversion of certain souls.

St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, martyrs - 03JUN

(c.1860-1886)
Patron: African Catholic Youth Action; Catholic youth; converts; torture victims.
Today, together with the whole Church, we honor twenty-two Ugandan martyrs. They are the first martyrs of Sub-Saharan Africa and true witnesses of the Christian faith. Charles Lwanga, a catechist and a young leader, was martyred in 1886 with a group of Catholic and Anglican royal pages, some of whom were not yet baptized. King Mwanga, who despised the Christian religion, gave orders that all the Christian pages in his service be laid upon a mat, bound, placed onto a pyre and burnt. This took place at Namugongo, just outside Kampala.

Charles was one of twenty-two Ugandan martyrs who converted from paganism. He was baptized November 1885, a year before his death, and became a moral leader. He was the chief of the royal pages and was considered the strongest athlete of the court. He was also known as "the most handsome man of the Kingdom of the Uganda." He instructed his friends in the Catholic Faith and he personally baptized boy pages. He inspired and encouraged his companions to remain chaste and faithful. He protected his companions, ages 13-30, from the immoral acts and homosexual demands of the Babandan ruler, Mwanga.

Mwanga was a superstitious pagan king who originally was tolerant of Catholicism. However, his chief assistant, Katikiro, slowly convinced him that Christians were a threat to his rule. The premise was if these Christians would not bow to him, nor make sacrifices to their pagan god, nor pillage, massacre, nor make war, what would happen if his whole kingdom converted to Catholicism?

When Charles was sentenced to death, he seemed very peaceful, one might even say, cheerful. He was to be executed by being burned to death. While the pyre was being prepared, he asked to be untied so that he could arrange the sticks. He then lay down upon them. When the executioner said that Charles would be burned slowly to death, Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith. He made no cry of pain but just twisted and moaned, "Kotanda! (O my God!)." He was burned to death by Mwanga's order on June 3, 1886. Pope Paul VI canonized Charles Lwanga and his companions on June 22,1964. We celebrate his memorial on June 3rd on the Roman Calendar. Charles is the Patron of the African Youth of Catholic Action.

2 Timothy 1:1-3, 6-12
Psalm 123:1-2
Mark 12:18-27
Many people seek the Almighty God at great heights of the world, by the use of force and power, knowing that God is great, omnipotent, and demanding. Indeed, God is great! Indeed, God is all-powerful and seeks every man to follow Him in the way He has chosen and provided. A man may climb the highest mountains of this world, search the cosmos without end. On the contrary, we will not find God at the summit of this broken and empty world, which points to the greatness of the Lord, but yet leaves the sentence unfinished, the final period missing, and the man still searching. Many have lost their lives after descending from the windy, icy, and lifeless peaks of the earth. A man may believe that he makes giant leaps into the cosmos, but these are but minuscule achievements if he has sought glory for himself and not glorified God, who can do all things with great ease. Many people seek the Omniscient God through the use of the great mind they have received from the Father of Creation. How intricate and complex are but the tiniest of nature’s processes. Scientific discoveries have opened the mind and given men great intelligence and knowledge of the world around them; in addition, however, their sight has become clouded, being unable to see the beautiful reflection of God’s hand in the world around them. How great are the laws of the Lord! How great is every life that God has placed upon the earth. Yet, man in his worldly wisdom has grown fond of what has been given to him, has taken its beauty for granted and failed to recognize even the smallest and innocent of God’s creatures that move and have life. Many have lost their lives in the land of the living because they have died in their selfishness, rational presumptions, and did not seek the God who exists. The wisdom of men will fail if it is not centered upon God, who is the Source of all knowledge and eternal life. God has fooled the eyes and minds of many because they have lost themselves in great heights, great achievements, complicated theories, and complex words, but have failed to recognize the simplicity of faith, the beauty of humility, and the greatness of love. Do not be ashamed of the God who suffers with greatest of love for the salvation of men; do not doubt in the power and grace the Lord God has ordained upon the hands of simple men to pour down the Spirit of God; do not be afraid to come to the Lord and His Church when the world blasphemes His holy Name, persecutes His Bride, and sends its demons upon many of the good faithful servants of the Lord who stand their ground and live upon the Rock of faith that will not move. God is not found in the greatness of this world but only in the next. And if anyone desires to find the Lord, they go to their inner room, become separated from the rest of the world, and pray to the Lord in the deepest and greatest depths of the heart. The Almighty Lord is found in the poverty of the heart, in those who have been broken by the world and other men, in the sick, weak, and forgotten. The world seeks its own wisdom, but the meek and the lowly have been chosen from this world for the greatness and the glory of the Lord. Christ has destroyed death through the Light of the Gospel and has given you the Church to guide His chosen people to Salvation. Seek not the world or its vanities, but seek to live in the spirit, and be pure like the angels of Heaven. Trust in the Lord at all times and become like a child who listens to His Mother, the Church. Christ becomes our Brother and God our Father when we walk with Him by humility, mercy, love, and with the hand of His Immaculate Mother.

Diary of St Maria Faustyna Kowalska
Notebook 6: 1625

1625 March 2, [1938]. I began Holy Lent in the way that Jesus wanted me to, making myself
totally dependent upon His holy will and accepting with love everything that He sends me. I
cannot practice any greater mortifications, because I am so very weak. This long illness has
sapped my strength completely. I am uniting myself with Jesus through suffering. When I
meditate on His Painful Passion, my physical sufferings are lessened.

St. Marcellinus and St. Peter - 02JUN

Peter and Marcellinus are two Roman martyrs who suffered under the Diocletian persecution, about the year 303; the first was an exorcist, the second a priest. Their cultus was so important that after peace was restored to the Church, Constantine built a basilica in their honor. Their names are mentioned in the Canon of the Mass (Eucharistic Prayer I).

Peter, an exorcist, was cast into prison at Rome, under the emperor Diocletian, by the judge Serenus, for confessing the Christian faith. He there set free Paulina, the daughter of Artemius, the keeper of the prison, from an evil spirit which tormented her. Upon this, Artemius and his wife and all their house, with their neighbors who had run together to see the strange thing, were converted to Jesus Christ. Peter therefore brought them to Marcellinus the priest, who baptized them all. When Serenus heard of it, he called Peter and Marcellinus before him, and sharply rebuked them, adding to his bitter words threats and terrors, unless they would deny Christ. Marcellinus answered him with Christian boldness, whereupon he caused him to be buffeted, separated him from Peter, and shut him up naked, in a prison strewn with broken glass, without either food or light. Peter also he confined. But when both of them were found to increase in faith and courage in their bonds, they were beheaded, unshaken in their testimony, and confessing Jesus Christ gloriously by their blood.

2 Peter 3:12-15, 17-18
Psalm 90:2-4, 10, 14, 16
Mark 12:13-17
Our faith and baptism call us to live already for Heaven right now, to be freed from the vanities and pollution that exist within society, to continue to search for holiness, and to purify ourselves of all worldly desires. The individual is to live daily and be drawn to the Lord to become more mature and holy. The old sinful ways must be extinguished, and the new ways of the spirit must guide the Christian forward. It takes prayer, discipline, patience, and grace to be found without spot or blemish. Those who search for the Lord will truly find peace and be able to walk daily in the knowledge of the Lord and the grace that the Spirit of God pours down from Heaven. Zeal for the Lord and concentrating on the eternal things will give a man peace so that he does not fall from spiritual stability. Time passes quickly, and only the Lord and Savior can comfort the heart and mind of all individuals who live in His presence. Those who form a more intimate and spiritual relationship with the Lord will persevere to the end through the many great and difficult trials throughout life. Christ has truly resurrected and given us a Church that guides Her children in Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. The faith of the Church demands that each individual remain pure, confess their sins, and receive the Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist. There can be no greater relationship and unity with the Lord upon the earth than uniting oneself to the Lord in body and spirit in faith. God has given us a great treasure that should never be taken lightly, but humbled before in great awe and love. God has hidden Himself to little children, who have separated themselves from the rest of the world, and forsaken themselves by entering into His Passion, Death, and Resurrection at the Altar of the Lord. No man can fully understand the great God or the Mystery we enter into at the Footstool of His Church. Yet in faith, we are humbled before the greatness of our Lord and receive Him into our hearts, minds, and bodies, as no other individual can. The Lord has been our refuge throughout the centuries, and we run to His Sanctuary for strength, peace, mercy, and love that He gives to us directly from Heaven. Humble yourselves to the Lord, and give to God what belongs to Him. There is no greater glory than to be a child of God and be united to the Lord in Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. The Almighty Lord has opened the doors of Heaven to those who live with Him. Let no man be found with spot or blemish before His greatness. God gives us His Peace through faith. Faith leads us to the Lord, and leads us to live daily for the Lord. It is faith that will save you, give you an everlasting hope and love through which you will find the mercy of the Lord and the salvation of your soul.
