Inward/Outward

Inward/Outward inward/outward posted daily quotes and meditations, and published small books and leaflets reflecting on life at the intersection of faith and justice.

It's a point of connection for individuals & groups around the world who walk the I/O journey together. We hope to nurture creative reflection as we face the challenges and possibilities of becoming who God longs for us to be. As a project of The Church of the Saviour in Washington, DC, with a long tradition of inviting people to the inward/outward journey in community, we also hope to inspire circles of compassionate action around the world.

The Critics - "It started at an after-work happy hour. Grousing about the all-but-notional pay raises, certain decisions made by the leadership team, the way those decisions were communicated. At first I mostly sat quietly and listened — after all, I loved my new job! What did I have to complain about?...."

You Belong - "What stands out for me is Jesus’ radical hospitality. He sees and receives the other beyond categorization or judgment. He meets each one in their particular need and extends wholehearted mercy. He sees us for so much more than what we have done or haven’t done, or what we have or don’t have. He sees us in our grief, our brokenness, and our preciousness. He wants us to have faith that we are beloved...."

Making Disciples - "Every day, they walked a glassy bridge from their spare rented room to the oncology unit for his chemo treatments. She, the mother, had given a bone marrow transplant as a last hope. He, the homeless son, needed that. She had locked her door against him when he started to steal her things, pawning them for drugs. Now they shared another umbilical embrace — love beyond reason...."

This is the final inspirational quote from InwardOutward.org. We are suspending these because our delivery system has been unable to post these quotes at a regular time. We hope you will enjoy the weekly gospel reflection on Saturday and engage with the reflection questions as our way to let the words of scripture come alive in your own life.

“The outward journey is not to be confused with the way of the crowd. Those on an outward journey can see the neighbor. Their world includes the technological age, the modern metropolis. They are concerned with shaping the church for responsible involvement. While it is a crucial mistake to assume that churches can be on an outward journey without being on an inward one, it is equally disastrous to assume that one can make the journey inward without taking the journey outward.”

“This is a book about the “narrow gate,” which will henceforth be referred to as the inward journey. It is a book concerned with the renewal of the church, for it holds that renewal cannot come to the church unless its people are on an inward journey.”

Pentecost Hearing - "Even though the InwardOutward (IO) writers come from four different communities within The Church of the Saviour, and write in very different ways, there was an underlying trust that made our decisions easy. We will let go of the daily quotes for now, focus on writing a personal gospel reflection, and add a single live link to some additional resource – a song, a poem, a book, or something else beyond the reflection questions that we usually provide.

Our new digital host will be a staff member at The Festival Center..."

--Marjory Zoet Bankson, Editor of Inward/Outward

Our talk began simply: “What’s good about writing an IO reflection? What’s hard for you?” We laughed as common complaints came up about keepin
