St. John's Episcopal Church, Georgetown, Washington DC Where Christian Tradition Meets Modern Life Welcome to St. John's! We love St. John's and its people and we love to welcome others.

The Tradition upon which we stand is as old as Jesus and his spiritual ancestors. What we do is based on ancient patterns - worship; caring for the poor and the lonely; working for justice and peace; education and formation of Christian minds and souls. We are for the dignity of every human being and for the need to serve and love our neighbors. We are for the importance of everyone's spiritual j

ourney, regardless of where they are on that journey. We are for the value of community, the reality of life's challenges and the sacredness of every person. And we are for a "user-friendly" church experience for individuals, families and children. And we are for sacred liturgy and music. We are against having all the answers; bigotry; authoritarianism; certitude in the face of ambiguity; superficial answers; indifference to injustice; bad music and blissful ignorance. We value open hearts, open minds, open arms; faith; staying rooted and staying current; discussion that allows for mutual respect; anyone's effort to seek a closer relationship with God in Christ; and a caring community.

The Book of Common Prayer, page 818, #14:

O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that, as there is but one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify THEE, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Join us for a gorgeous service on Mother's Day, 5/10, 10AM, when the choir will sing a stunning setting of this ancient text:

As truly as God is our Father, so just as truly is he our Mother.
In our Father, God Almighty, we have our being;
In our merciful Mother we are remade and restored.
Our fragmented lives are knit together.
And by giving and yielding ourselves, through grace,
To the Holy Spirit we are made whole.
It is I, the strength and goodness of Fatherhood.
It is I, the wisdom of Motherhood.
It is I, the light and grace of holy love.
It is I, the Trinity.
I am the sovereign goodness in all things.
It is I who teach you to love.
It is I who teach you to desire.
It is I who am the reward of all true desiring.
All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well. Amen.
