COME SING WITH US! Later this summer, St Paul’s, K Street will be holding auditions for volunteer positions in our two semi-professional choirs!

The Parish Choir, St Paul’s principal choir, sings on Sunday mornings, major Feast days, and other special services. The music for Sunday Mass typically includes a choral setting of the Mass Ordinary, two anthems or motets, and Anglican and Gregorian chant. The choir’s repertoire spans the breadth of Western sacred literature, with a particular emphasis on Renaissance polyphony, music of the English Cathedral tradition, and works by living composers. If you love singing this type of music, St Paul’s is the place to be! Rehearsals are Thursday evenings 7–9:30pm, and Sunday calls are 9:30am–12pm. Choir & Organ has lauded the Parish Choir as “one of the most responsive and adaptable choirs on the Eastern seaboard.”

The Evensong Choir sings Choral Evensong & Benediction (“E&B”), which is offered twice monthly from September through May. This ensemble provides one of the few opportunities in the area to regularly perform Evensong repertoire in context. The time commitment is relatively minimal: we meet on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of each month at 2:30pm for a short rehearsal preceding the 4pm service. Due to the limited time for rehearsing, singers with prior Evensong experience and those with strong sight-reading and ensemble skills are particularly well-suited.

Both ensembles consist of a small group of extremely capable volunteer singers supported by a professional core. We take our music making seriously, but we have a good time doing it! More information and recent repertoire lists are available at www.saintpaulskstreet.org/music, and Parish Choir recordings are available on Spotify and YouTube. Please contact Michael Fili, Director of Music, at [email protected] with any questions or to request an audition. Singers of all faith backgrounds are welcome!

10:30 am | Solemn Mass

The Music at Solemn Mass
Setting: Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena, Willan
Psalm 50:7-15, John Naylor
Anthem: My eyes for beauty pine, Howells
Anthem: I sat down under His shadow, Bairstow
Voluntaries: “The peace may be exchanged” and “The people respond Amen!” from Rubrics, Dan Locklair

“The disease [of sin] must be understood before it can be cured. ‘They that be whole need not a physician’ (Mt 9:12); and they that imagine they are whole, whether they are sick or not, will not care for a physician. They must be made to understand themselves before they can understand the gospel of redemption. The primary difficulty that we encounter lies here: those whom we address do not apprehend their need of the Gospel. ... they regard the work of Christ as superfluous, and His Church as unnecessary, except for its salutary, social influences. Therefore we must begin with exposing the profound deceit of the natural heart, … so that man may be driven to seek help from One Who is able to save.”
—The Most Rev’d Thomas Clark, V Rhode Island & XII Presiding Bishop

Thursday, June 4 – CORPUS CHRISTI
6:45 pm | Solemn Mass, Procession of the Most Blessed Sacrament & Benediction
Reception to follow, hosted by our Parish ward of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament

The Music at the Feast
Setting: Communion Service in C, Ireland
Psalm 116:11-16, Howells
Beneath the Cross, Ed Rex
Ave verum Corpus, Mozart

Why do Anglo-Catholics keep Corpus Christi? Simply put, it is the principal Feast whereby we offer profound thanks to God for the Means by which He gave His Church to perpetuate continually the Sacrifice of His Son: The Body (Corpus) of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He who came down from Above to offer His Body once on the Cross for all our sins, daily renews that Saving Sacrifice to His Father on every altar of the Church through His priests, who give to us His Body sacramentally that we might “ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of His redemption.” Join us on Thursday in adoring this tangible “Love, breathing its unvarying intercession before the Throne” – that Love which shall one day surely carry each of us Home.

On the Feast of the Trinity (and the final day in Mary’s month) St Paul’s witnessed the Confirmation of nine persons and Reception of two into The Episcopal Church! It was a joy to solemnly welcome the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde on her triennial Ordinary Visitation to preach, confirm, receive, and offer the Eucharistic Sacrifice of Our Lord to His Father and ours by the power of the Holy Ghost. Bishop Budde also presented a well-deserved award of recognition to one of our faithful members, Kahn (3rd image, center), for his “spirit of joy and courage in his service at the altar and his service to those in need in the community.” Amidst the thuribles swinging and the transcendent voices of the Choir, worship was truly offered in the “beauty of holiness.” We thank God, the Bishop, and all who joined in supporting those confirmed and received. May Our Lady and St Paul pray for you!

“Let us never in the midst of the business of the Church lose sight of the fact that there is such a mistake as that of being very busy with the affairs of the Kingdom of heaven and yet of possessing very little personal knowledge of The King; nor let us forget, in trying to fit our work in with the conditions in which we find ourselves, that the supreme need of men everywhere, whatever may be their superficial desires, is just that need which certain Greeks expressed, as we are told in St John’s Gospel: ‘Sir, we would see Jesus.’”
—The Rt Rev’d William Hare, Missionary Bishop of Niobrara

E&B this Sunday is the LAST before this sublime service adjourns ‘til the end of September. The Parish & Evensong Choirs will join together to offer a superb festal offering of music unto God. Above all, Our Lord Himself will be exposed at His Altar, incense of prayers arising. Do join us at 4, and stay for the reception afterwards!

“‘Come, Holy Ghost, eternal God,’ never fitter to be sung than now. […]. ‘Cast me not, O Lord,’ for-ever, though we are now full of errors, ‘from Thy presence, and keep not Thy Holy Spirit from us,’ but let Thy Spirit of Truth come down and guide us out of our wanderings, ‘give us the comfort of His help again,’ guide us again into the ways of truth, and ‘stablish us there with Thy free Spirit’ – and that for the merits and mercies of Thine only Son, Who here promised to send Him, and this day accordingly sent Him to guide us to Himself from grace to grace, from truth to truth. From truth below to true happiness above, Jesus Christ our Saviour. To Whom be glory and dominion for-ever and ever.” Amen.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Michael Fili as Director of Music & Choirmaster at St Paul’s! A professional conductor and tenor, a nationally acclaimed composer, and faculty member at Howard University, Michael is an exceptional choral musician and educator, and has been involved with the Choirs of the Parish for the last 14 years. Named Composer-in-Residence in 2024, Michael began coordinating the Parish’s Music Program ad interim this past January, and it soon became apparent that his leadership, together with Isza’s service at the organ, could not have proven a better fit for K Street. Above all, Michael has a deep appreciation for the Anglo-Catholic liturgies of the Church, and how the repertoire and drama of our choral services must be intimately interwoven into that tradition. Please join us in congratulating Michael on his appointment!

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Isza Wu as Assistant Director of Music & Organist at St Paul’s! Isza has been serving as Interim Organist since mid-January, and it is with gladness that she proceeds to join us permanently on staff. Having been sometime Organ Scholar at S. Clement’s and St Mark’s in Philadelphia, Isza understands the key role of the organist in Anglo-Catholic liturgies, and her adeptness in the service music at Solemn Mass and E&B continue to enrich both Choir and Congregation’s praise of God “in the firmament of His power.” Please join us in congratulating Isza on her appointment!

Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35, J. Marcus Ritchie

“‘This is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom Thou hast sent.’ [Jn 17:3]. Did Christ indeed say nothing about the Church and the sacraments? Did He say nothing about doctrine? We know what St Paul felt about right belief. With a world waiting to be converted, he took time to explain and re-explain his faith. His epistles develop a complete system of theology. He was always stressing, above all else, the absolute need of a right attitude toward Christ the Son of God. But we are not stopping at St Paul, we are going back to Christ. Jesus Christ was constantly pointing men to Himself and asking, ‘What do you think about Me?’ Unless you believe in Me aright, He seems to say, you will have small incentive to follow Me. ‘I am the Way’: walk ye in it; ‘I am the Truth’: accept and believe it; ‘I am the Life’: receive and live it. The Christian life can be lived only through faith in Me. The Christian character is the outcome of the Christian creed. The Gospel, in other words, is not a creedless Gospel. The creed is a Gospel creed.”
