Dr. Fadi Atrash, Augustana Victoria Hospital (AVH) Chief Executive Officer made visits on Capitol Hill this week urging follow-through on funding promises for the vital services provided by the East Jerusalem hospital system and removal of political barriers to aid corridors in the war-ravaged region. In this meeting, we’re grateful that Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont (photo center) met with Dr. Atrash (2nd from left) and advocacy staff of both the ELCA and Friends Committee on National Legislation - FCNL. AVH is a ministry of The Lutheran World Federation.

Intro to ELCA Worship resource: "...While ...ELCA worship resources in general refrain from commemorating Independence Day as a liturgical occasion outside of intercessory prayer, this milestone anniversary and its broader national context present a unique situation. In witness to the church’s ardent stand against Christian nationalism in its various and insidious forms, and in response to implementing resolution CA25.05.25 of the 2025 ELCA Churchwide Assembly,1 the Worship Resource Development Working Group of the ELCA Churchwide Organization and Augsburg Fortress has developed resources for this specific occasion that both celebrate and lament our nation’s history, affirm the reality of the current moment, and seek to unite the diverse body of Christ for the life of the world."

A reminder of this material available for use next month. On July 4, 2026, the nation will mark the semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Newly curated worship resources are now available for a service on Sunday, July 5 or to help guide any special services. Content is comprised of liturgical texts including an Affirmation of Christian Vocation in Civic life, a preaching help, and guidance for church musicians. Over 250 Christians gathered to unite against oppression in Palestine and Israel at a Joint Christian Advocacy Summit, organized in early May through Churches for Middle East Peace with cosponsors including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The powerful witness included workshops and panels, many featuring ELCA leaders, and advocacy on Capitol Hill.
