Don't forget! Today (March 10) is the last day to contribute to our unit's donation to Oyster-Adams Bilingual School's Black History Project in honor of Earl Williams.
For decades, Earl Williams has faithfully served our church community—volunteering as security for UMW’s Fall Bazaar and Book & Bake Sales and serving as an usher at National UMC, where you can find him at the Metropolitan Memorial campus counting attendance each week.
In 1955, however, Earl made history as the first Black student to enroll at Oyster-Adams Bilingual School in Washington, DC’s Woodley Park neighborhood. Today, the school is honoring Earl and its first Black teacher, Ms. Betty Brooks, with a permanent exhibit recognizing their courage and legacy.
Middle school students are researching and helping to create this exhibit at the lower campus to ensure their stories are preserved for future generations of Oyster-Adams students.
UMW member Esther Turner, who is helping lead fundraising for the project, brought this initiative to our attention. Our UMW Board has approved bundling individual donations from UMW members into a collective gift to the Oyster School for their Black Pioneers display in honor of Earl.
This is a wonderful opportunity to support a Black History project in DC while honoring Earl’s long-standing service to our church community.
