King Emmanuel Baptist Church

King Emmanuel Baptist Church We are a Baptist Church that believes the Bible is the Word of God and is the guide whereby we govern ourselves.

We love the Lord and are committed to reaching out to all. The times of our services are posted below, and are subject to change at the direction of the Holy Spirit. When we gather together for worship, we gather to praise God, hear from God, then leave to serve God by serving humanity. We believe that God is not willing for anyone to perish but for all to come to the saving grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Good Morning!
On yesterday the title of my sermon was: "A Cheerful Giver" Scripture text 2Corinthians 9:6ff (-6-15). Let me preface what i am about to say by saying preaching about money is something I am not known for, so please don't think this is about ONLY GIVING MONEY!

Introduction: In the book of Acts we read that there would be a famine throughout the known inhabited world. This prophecy was fulfilled during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius. The home church @ Jerusalem suffered greatly during this time.
Murray J. Harris a contributing writer to the Expositors Bible Commentary said in his exposition on 2Corinthians that a number of factors besides the famine contributed to the Jerusalem Church being in the predicament they were in. (1) After their conversion t Christianity many Jews in Jerusalem would have been ostracized socially and economically. (2) the experiment in community sharing (Acts 2:44,45) undoubtedly would have aggravated though it did not cause their poverty... )3) persistent food shortages in Palestine because overpopulation culminated in the famine of A.D. 46 in the time of Emperor Claudius... (4) Jews in Palestine were subject to a crippling twofold taxation, Jewish and Roman.
The predicament that the home church was in prompted the Apostle Paul to begin a collection from the other churches to send to the home church at Jerusalem to help them. Many of the Jewish Christians were suspect of Paul's ministry to the Gentiles and this collection would further serve to bring them together in the mind of Paul....There are as pointed out in this text a number of factors that should be attatched with any offering we give.

I. It should be a freewill offering
1) In giving freely we must condition ourselves to giving. If we condition ourselves by looking at what we have we will never be able to see and understand the ways of God.
A) This is not to say that God wants us to give something we don't have (that is made clear in the 8th chapter 8:12).
2) We have to embrace the proverb that Paul quotes i.e. "if we sow sparingly we will reap sparingly!"
3) A freewill offering is something that you have already determined in your heart to give.
A) If it is not given of our own freewill then it is not a freewill offering!
B) If we allow someone to coerce us into giving something with the threat that we are robbing God (uh-oh! it's tight but its right!) then it is not a freewill offering.
C) If I am trying to give something based on the fear that I am robbing God and I don't want to be cursed then it is not a freewill offering!
D) Once it has been determined through inner retrospection and meditation then I am able to not only give it freely but also give it cheerfully!

II. A freewill offering is a cheerful offering
1) We can give cheerfully because we know we are giving it in obedience to what our heart is telling us is in accordance with God's guidance.
A) It is not given with regret (grudgingly) or out of necessity because someone has made us feel we are under compulsion to give.
B) You give with confidence that God is able to supply all your needs through His divine grace, and make it so favor comes your way!
2) The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
A) You will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God.

III. What a freewill offering produces
1) Our actions in giving freely not only supply the needs of others but also result in praises to God
A) I.e. I once was helped by someone when I first joined the church. His actions showed me the love of Jesus. Through his actions I saw the blessed character of a man of God. When I told him in a card of thanks I gave to him that, "the world would be a better place if there were more Christians like him" I was giving praise to God.
2) When I was able to help someone in the same manner as I was helped, they in turn gave praise to God!
3) So! It is our actions that speak louder than any words we can speak!
A) When our actions of giving are done with no strings attached, freely, without regret, and we top it off with cheer it will produce praise to God!....

Conclusion
From the word cheerful we get the word from the Greek word "hilaros" which is translated to our English word hilarious. We can conclude from this that God wants us to give with hilarity!
Also from hilaros we get the meaning "Propitious" which signifies readiness of mind, that joyousness which is prompt to do anything; hence, "cheerful!"
Well consider "Propitious" and think that the Bible tells us that Jesus is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (IJohn 2:2).
He was a willing participant in God's plan to purchase our redemption, and the writer of Hebrews tells us that He endured the agony of the cross and despised the shame for He saw the joy it would bring, in spite of the great contradiction of sinners against Him. (Hebrews 12:2).
Think about Jesus being a willing participant to freely give Himself as a sacrifice. When we consider that, how can we have anything but a cheerful disposition when we give of our time, our resources and our very own lives to bring praise to God!?...PeacE!

On Sunday it was back to the pulpit @ KEBC where I have been called by God to serve as Pastor. During my 4 week absence I thought I would use the time for some much needed R&R! (and fishing!)
As it turned out during my time away I attended 6 funeral services of which I officiated @ 1 and did a gravesite service. Along with the 6 funerals I officiated @ a wedding. SO MUCH FOR R&R!
The title of my sermon on Sunday was: "When compassion overrides the Desire to Rest Mark 6:30-44. Introduction: (condensed) In this fast paced and hurry up world we are often left feeling like there just isn't enough time in the day, and we are often left lamenting: "there is no rest for the weary!"
If situations and circumstances seem to become burdensome and too much for us, it is wise to reevaluate why we are doing things. Work for the Lord should never be a burden, for He has promised to lighten our loads. (Matthew 11:28)
In this narrative as recorded in the Gospel of Mark it was Jesus' idea for the disciples to come aside and take a much needed rest. They attempted to do so and immediately we see they were met with additional challenges instead of rest!
At times like these we need to depend on the Spirits power and not our own power!

Point (1) Don't be discouraged when rest is interrupted
A) There are times when no place is secluded enough
B) for when you commit to the cause of the Gospel you must always be ready to answer the Spirit's beckoning call (Acts 8:1ff; Acts 16:1ff;)
C) These scriptures and many others in the Old and New Testament show that the Spirit of God had a way of interrupting human itineraries, and it was always for the good!.

Point (2) Compassion is always a overriding factor to interrupt our plans to rest
A) Verse 34 tells us that it was "COMPASSION" that moved Jesus to override the need to rest.
B) It is safe to conclude that compassion is what overrode the desire to rest and the sight of the crowd is what stirred up that compassion in Jesus.
C) If we are to have the compassion and mindset of God we should also show the compassion of God in our actions.
D) The multitude were like sheep without a shepherd
E) In looking at the crowd the disciples recognized their need for food to sustain them and suggested they be sent on their way to get food for themselves. (Imagine their shock when Jesus told them "YOU GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO EAT!"

Point (3) Compassion is always supplied with the resources necessary from God!
A) When we are thankful for the little that we have and acknowledge to God our thankfulness, He will step in and multiply what we have! We cannot explain how God does some things but we have evidence that they are done!
B) when you are face with overwhelming odds and circumstances you ought to do just this! Thank God for what you have! When God sees your attitude He will take you to another altitude! He'll begin to miracuously multiply what you have.
C) I've seen this personally happen @ the KEBC! When I came there and took the reigns as Pastor it was what looked like a hopeless situation.
D) the building was in terribe shape from the bottom up! I remember the first day they gave me a tour of the whole church (after I accepting the call to serve as Pastor). I got home and argued with God, telling Him of all the work that needed to be done (as if He didn't know it already!) In the process of time God had to get me to stop looking at what we had, and realize it wasn't about any individual!
E) Well lest I keep you too long let me just say that in the process of time we went from our initial offering (for the building fund) which was $876.00 to raising over $117.000! In the first two years! To date I have been there for 5 years 8 months and 20 days. We have now raised over $170.000 (ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY THOUSAND!) and we haven't borrowed a nickel from anyone or begged and coerced anyone to give!
Conclusion: this post won't allow me to tell you all that God has done! (But lest I am guilty of what my late mentor used to say about Baptist Preachers: i.e. they will take a text, leave the text, and not come back to the text!) Let me say that it's never contingent on what you have that God uses to make a difference in situations.
Our human tendency is to pass the responsibility off on someone else just as the disciples attempted to do (VS 35,36).
But, if you have a heart of compassion God will always supply the resources to match that compassion. I'm glad that Jesus had a heart of compassion!
His compassion was evident in the Garden of Gethsemane when He wanted to rest on what He had already accomplished. But God! In His wise providence saw many more that needed some compassion, and the only way to extend it to a dying humanity was for Jesus to go by a hill called Calvary. There on Calvary the most inflential character ever to grace the dusty shores of earth hung, bled and died on a rugged cross. Was taken down and laid in a borrowed tomb. He got up early on a Sunday morning and when He got up the floodgates were opened, and the hymnologist said it opened up a fountain.... PeacE!

Good Morning family, friends, and all! On 7/20 Rev Calvin Jackson preached a very well prepared sermon on "the battle between 2 natures" Scripture text: Romans 7: 13-25. Very good message!
On Sunday 7/27 I preached for the last time @ KEBC before going on my vacation. The title of my sermon was: "How to avoid BLOWOUTS, BLACKOUTS, & BURNOUTS!" Scripture text Mark 6: 30,31. (It has been said that we Baptist Preachers always have 3 points, and we use alliteration a lot... I'M GUILTY! AND BY THE WAY BEING ALLITERATIVE REQUIRES A LOT OF THINKING! :-)
In this text Jesus' disciples return from a mission He sent them on. They begin to tell Him of the success they had. He observed the throngs of people coming and going, and observed that the disciples had no time for themselves. So, He tells them to come aside to a quiet place and rest awhile.
I. How to avoid blowouts
1) The first thing we must do is realize what our limitations are
A) Oftentimes we allow our ego's to be inflated because of something we may have done.
B) We stay humble minded and grounded when we don't think to highly of ourselves, and esteem others higher than ourselves. (Romans 12:3).
2) The tires on a car have recommendations from the manufacturer that will help you avoid blowing the tire out!
A) You cannot put more air in the tire than whats recommended without being in danger of heading for a blowout.
3) In the Spiritual Sense we have been inflated by the Holy Spirit of God to do certain things, and we must be certain that we stay in the bounds of what we have been designed to do!
A) It's when we become puffed up and think we know it all (1Cor. 8:1) that we are allowing our ego's to be inflated. When that happens we are headed for a blowout. (Lest I keep you too long let me move on to my 2nd point!) Let the church say AMEN! Preach Pastor Bell!
II. How to avoid blackouts!
1) I have heard numerous stories of alcoholics that have experienced blackouts.
A) Blackouts usually happen when you don't pay attention to the warning signs, and you continue on doing the same things and expecting different results.
B) In the case of alcoholics, they have all kinds of mishaps that warn them that alcohol is an allergy to them, but they continue to drink, and ignore all the warning signs.
2) In the spiritual sense we also have all kinds of warnings that certain things are an allergy to our spiritual well being.
A) For example we think things and we don't filter out the things that are not in line with the Word of God, and before you know it those things we think become actions, and the actions, become habits, and the habits become our character.
B) The end result is that we wake up from a Spiritual Blackout and like the alcoholic we wonder how we got there! (It's tight but its right!).
III. How to avoid burnouts
1) To avoid burnouts you must pay attention to the inner mechanism' installed in us all, and don't ignore the warning signs.
A) We usually burn something out when we don't heed the manufacturers specifications in using it, and we stretch it beyong what it is capable of doing.
2) My car (2011 Chev HHR) is equipped with an onboard computer that informs me of various things.
A) I can hit a button on the left side of the steering wheel and scroll it down and get info on how far I have traveled; how far before I will need some gas; the tire pressure of each tire; the % of life left in the oil filter before changing it, and other things.
B) When it comes to my oil filter, (which is very vital to keep from burning out the engine) it will tell me how much longer I have before changing my oil whenever I inquire.
C) HOWEVER! When the % of the life of my oil filter gets down to around 5% or less I will have a constant message telling me I need to change my oil soon! I can hit the button on my steering wheel and return things back to normal, but as I drive along that message is constantly before me. CHANGE OIL SOON! And no matter how many times I X it out (so to speak) it comes back! CHANGE OIL SOON! The thing is, if I don't heed the built in warning system installed by the manufacturer I can burn the engine out on my car!
3) In the Spiritual Sense we have an inner mechanism that warns us of the danger we are in when we are headed for a Spiritual Burnout.
A) We continue to go along without the aid of the Holy Spirit (THE OIL) and we think our lamps are trimmed and burning as we wait for the Bridegroom to come, but our lamps are gone out.
B) When our lamps are burned out we are headed for BURNOUT also!
Conclusion
To avoid blowouts, blackouts, and burnouts we need to remember the one who came down through forty and two generations. He never thought to highly of Himself (Philippians 2: 1ff) He humbled Himself and became a servant! Allowed the soldiers to arrest Him and bring Him up on dubious charges.
They found Him guilty and sentenced Him to death, on the top of a hill called Calvary! There on Calvary He suffered, bled and died. He was taken down from the cross and laid in a borrowed tomb. He rose from the dead on the third day morning.....
He gave power to the church to carry out the mandate of telling a dying world of a living Savior and the Grace of God.
Every now and then just like a car we have to go aside and allow hIm to make adjustments. To lubricate us and charge us back up....

On yesterday the young people took praise to another level! The renditions we were blessed with were truly annointed. Sister Sheray Millhouse is committed, annointed and humble!
My sermon title was: "Be careful what you download!" The scripture text focused on Proverbs 4:23 (Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of the heart come the issues of life).
I was trying to get across in my points that: A: your mind is the greatest computer ever invented. With your computer (smartphone/ tablet etc.) you are careful what you download to it, and you pay attention to messages that warn you of harmful things before you download them.
1) Computers/ smartphones and other such devices use FIREWALLS AND ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE to warn us of the danger of not having it. Failure to heed the warnings will cause your device to be infiltrated with bugs. Once a computer is infiltrated with bugs the cpu becomes bogged down and it hangs up, and won't respond to mouse clicks. Your hard drive loses space and other things begin to happen that hampers the performance of the device. When that happens your computer is said to be "infected."
2) Once a computer gets infected, it then has a 'VIRUS" and when that happens it spreads itself and duplicates itself. When you launch a program that may look to be genuine the VIRUS can disguise itself in the program and wreck all kinds of havoc to your device... rendering it almost useless to do anything constructive!
3) To counteract the devastating effects of bugs and viruses we need antivirus programs installed. A long time ago bugs entered into human brain activity and it was called sin. Sin spread in the human race and the virus was/is passed on from one generation to another. But there is an antidote to the devastating effects of sin, and that antidote is the blood of Jesus that was shed on Calvary's cross!
Not only is His blood an antidote but when we are injected with it through faith and the confession of our mouths (Rom. 10:9,10) we are given an antivirus that warns us of downloading certain things to the hard drives of our minds. That something is the Holy Spirit of God whereby we are sealed till the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:30).
Daily we must watch what we download! Hatred, Gossip, Bigotry, etc. will invite bugs in, and the result will be a virus and we become ineffective witnesses for the one who loved us and gave Himself for us.
But! When we download things like, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance we impart the fragrance of the antidote we have been injected with to a world that is looking for the same! PeacE!

Part II :-)
The people that came to investigate what they were told happened saw the man sitting and clothed in his right mind, and listened to the testimony of the people to validate what had happened.
They then proceeded to ask Jesus to leave their region and go elsewhere! I have always marveled at this text and how the parallel is so strong to our society that would rather lock young men and women away because they can't do anything with them, rather than look past the profits they lose when those young men and women are made free, by the Master.
If you don't agree, then thats your right to not agree, but check out the profits the prison industrial movement generates and see if you feel the same.
Think of the profits that would be lost because of those held by the shackles of trying to get ahead through illicit means would turn their lives around.
A sermon that I hope generates a thought! PeacE!

PS: CD'S AND DVD'S AVAILABLE ON REQUEST OF EVERY SERVICE;
CD'S $5, AND DVD'S $10. It goes to our Building Fund. (what black Baptist Church have you seen that didn't have a building fund! :-)

I haven't posted anything for awhile pertaining to the sermon I preached etc. on this page. A friend commneted on that. So here goes: On Sunday my sermon was entitled, "Freedom from Bo***ge!" The text was Mark 5:1-20. The narrative is about a man who was demon possessed and lived in the tombs.
He couldn't be tamed by anyone. They used chains etc. to bound him and he just broke free from them. Then Jesus came to the region and had an encounter with the man. The demons in him spoke to Jesus and said: "what do we have to do with you Jesus"(i.e. what do we have in common?). Jesus commanded the demons to come out of the man, and they begged Him to be able to enter into the herd of pigs feeding on a hill. He granted them leave to enter the pigs, and when they did the pigs immediately ran off the cliff and drowned in the sea.
There is much speculation as to why Jesus allowed them to enter into the pigs. I think the best answer I found (from the Expositors Bible Commentary) is that Jesus perhaps wanted the people and the man to know that the demons had left the man, and that the same way they destroyed the pigs they were trying to destroy the man.
Upon seeing the pigs run off the cliff and drown, those that kept them went to the town and told what had happened. What happened next was strange! continued...

When I came to KEBC after being called as the 4th Pastor, I met Rev Dinnio McNeill. He had been faithfully watching over the pulpit in the absence of a pastor. When I accepted the calling he asked me if I could start the next week (Dec 21, 2008). Rev McNeill was 88 years old at the time. He graciously stepped aside and told me I was his pastor. He was always an encouragement to me and an inspiration to be around. On yesterday he answered a higher calling and was called from labor to reward. My heart is heavy, but my gratitude soars above the heavens that I was priviledged to meet him. I will see him in the morning. Rest in the arms of Jesus!
PeacE!

Had a great anniversary celebration on yesterday. In the morning service the preacher was Rev Nathan Barnes, Associate of Israel Baptist Church. The afternoon service had Rev Dr. E.R. Pierson, Pastor of Resurrection Baptist Church. The theme for the anniversary was: "The called, the chosen, and the sent". The scripture text was Romans 10:14,15.
The years surely go by quickly! This was my 4th anniversary. Thank God! Thank God! Thank God!

Today's sermon was inspired by a training class I took this week. The titlte of the sermon was: "Measuring up to the right standard." In the training class I took we ran test to test the density % reflected of remanufactured laser toner cartridges. It involved running some 12,000 copies and at certain intervals the density reflection % was measured and compared to the OEM. (Original Equipment Manufacture). The OEM was the baseline standard that was used to get the comparison. One print that was used was a page that had 5 check points. (the 4 corners and the center). The other page that was used was a blank page. (On the blank page the 4 readings that were recorded were North, South, East, West.) Even though the page was blank it had passed through the Laser in the printer.
The instructor of this class informed us that in our training we were using Adobe 6 (PDF) and if we used a higher version then the print results would be lighter.
As I thought about it doing the training: I saw where the blank page was the most important page in the life of the Christian. In Matt. 5:43-48, Jesus told us that we can not measure up to the worlds standard. (the worlds standard OEM = Old Everyday Mess) To be his disciples we must run a higher program. The program He insist we run is not by Adobe or the world. It's by an OEM, but the OEM is: the Omniscient Eternal Messiah!
The instructions are also in a PDF format. (Not Portable Document Format, but Plainly Divine Format AKA Christianity 101! This is the baseline we must use which is a much higher baseline, and it is supposed to print lighter, because the author is the light of the world and we must reflect that light.
The reason I said the blank page is the most important one is because when you look at a blank page and think about the four points on it, you can envision the cross. It was @ the cross where we first saw the light!
Everyday the Master gives us a balnk page and tells us to write! What we write is our cross, and it should reflect his character!
Well, that's the condensed version. Whole version is availabe upon request! PeacE out!
