The Cathedral church and parish is named for Saint Matthew the Apostle, the patron saint of civil servants, recognizing all those who serve in the municipal, state, and national governments and the many international organizations located in the metropolitan area. As the Mother Church of the archdiocese, it pl

ays a major role in the Catholic life of the nation’s capital. Twice our Cathedral Parish has been honored with a visit here from the Chief Shepherd of the Church Universal. The first was in 1979 when Saint John Paul II celebrated Mass, and the second in 2015, our 175th Parish Anniversary year, when Pope Francis came to pray with our nation's bishops. President John F. Kennedy's funeral Mass was celebrated in the Cathedral on November 25,1963. Requiems have been held here for several heads of state. Annually, on the Sunday before the first Monday in October when the Supreme Court of the United States begins its regular term, a special Mass is celebrated praying for the Holy Spirit to guide all those who are members of the legal profession. Known as the "Red Mass" in reference to the vestment color, the Supreme Court justices, members of Congress, the President's Cabinet, diplomatic corps, local municipal, state and national government leaders, and sometimes the President of the United States join the celebration.

Please pray with us with our intercessions for Sunday, June14, for the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time:

For all those who lead the Church to a more profound and authentic Christian life, centered on the Gospel, especially Our Holy Father, Pope Leo, our Archbishop, Cardinal McElroy, and for the newly ordained priests and deacons of our Archdiocese as they begin this new chapter in their ministry to the Body of Christ;

For an end to violence and war in Ukraine and the Middle East, especially in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza and other war-torn areas of the world; and for a lessening of tensions that lead to gun-violence and other assaults that tear at the fabric of society in our own country;

For the victims of weather extremes and other natural disasters; for the success of efforts to curb global warming; and for all who will be travelling this weekend and throughout this summer; for their safety and health.

For an increase in trust and civility among those who engage in political discourse. And for a commitment to care for immigrants, especially those in detention centers; for refugees and those whose voice is diminished by poverty, lack of opportunity, or their country of origin.

For those who cherish and defend the intrinsic dignity of each human person. For those in the military and first responders, for journalists and judges, for peace-keepers and humanitarian aid workers. For the pursuit of freedom, justice and charity.

For the sick, and all who have asked for our prayers, especially Suzanne Wilder, Anne Rader and Barbara Lee Kerester and for those suffering from Ebola, malaria, malnutrition and respiratory diseases.

For those who have died in faith and who await the eternal joy promised by Christ, and for those who lost lives through wars, famine and disease;

Let us pray to the Lord.
℟. Lord, hear our prayer.

On the Occasion of the U.S. Bishops Consecrating the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, please pray this prayer with us!

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus:
You know the longings of our hearts, and you desire that we enjoy friendship with you.
From your pierced side, you have poured out the wellspring of life, for which we thirst.
Your heart burns with a love for all people to return to a right relationship with you.
We celebrate the abundant gifts you have given this nation, founded on the self-evident truths that our Creator has endowed all people with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
We make reparation for the offenses against you and against human dignity that have taken place in this nation.
May our hearts be united to yours, so that our families and communities enjoy peace and happiness; may broken relationships be reconciled, injustices repaired, and the wounds of our land be healed.
May your holy Catholic Church serve as a sign, pointing all people to your infinite love.
O Desire of Nations and Center of History, we ask you to bless these United States of America.
Who live and reign with God the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

Come to the new series on the Letter to the Ephesians! Tuesday evenings: June 16/23/30 7pm – 8:30pm in the East Conference Room.

Jesus tells us that eternal life is knowing God. How can any of us say we know God? Do you know God? And, do we know God like we know our loved ones? Knowing God is much more than our normal ways of knowing. We know by our senses, by reason, and by experience. Scripture holds out a deeper reality: knowing by identity. It involves God lavishing the divine love upon us. It is Divine Knowledge and gratuitous grace, and it is the message of the Letter to the Ephesians.

We will reflect on the Letter to the Ephesians chapter by chapter. Each class will have a lecture combined with dynamic conversation. Come experience the liberating grace of Christ!

Please pray with us with our intercessions for Sunday, June 7, for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi:

For the continued health and vigor of our Holy Father, Pope Leo, and for a broad acceptance and engagement of his encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, on Safeguarding the Human Person in the time of Artificial Intelligence.

For a deeper understanding and appreciation of the transformative power of our Sunday Eucharist. For catechists and all those helping others to grasp the meaning and significance of our participation in the Body of Christ.

For all those who hunger for food and clean water. For farmers who grow the food we eat and for humanitarian efforts that distribute food to starving and malnourished people. And for those who are searching for ways to make the world a more sustainable place for future generations.

For those who hunger for justice and peace. For all those who dedicate their lives to end conflicts throughout the world, especially in the Holy Land, Ukraine and war-torn lands.

For immigrants and refugees throughout the world and in our own country who are suffering from harsh conditions in detention centers and camps, or who live in fear of intimidation, prejudice, or fear-mongering. For those who come to the aid of the voiceless.

For the sick and all who have asked for our prayers, especially Anne Rader. For all those suffering from the Ebola Virus and for those coming to their aid.

For all those of our family and friends who have died, that they may know the joys of the heavenly banquet; and for all those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Let us pray to the Lord.
℟. Lord, hear our prayer.
