•40 hours devotion of the Blessed Sacrament•

In support of Holy Comforter-Saint Cyprian Parish. 40 hours of devotion from 8pm March 7th to 11am March 9th

What is Forty Hours?

Forty Hours Devotion is a special 40-hour period of continuous prayer made before the Blessed Sacrament in solemn exposition. Affirming our belief in the real presence of our Lord Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we come to visit and adore the Lord present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. The Forty Hours Devotion begins with a solemn exposition of the Blessed Sacrament wherein the sacred Host remains on the altar in a “monstrance” like the one seen on the cover of this flyer. During the next 40 hours, the faithful gather for personal or public prayer in adoration of our Lord. All the faithful (adults and youth)are encouraged to sign up to watch and pray for at least one hour during this period. Sign up will be available online and in other ways listed below.

The number forty has always signified a sacred period of time: the rains during the time of Noah lasted 40 days and nights; the Jews wandered through the desert for 40 years, our Lord fasted and prayed for 40 days before beginning His public ministry. The Forty Hours Devotion remembers that traditional “forty-hour period” from our Lord’s burial until the resurrection.

CHANTRY CONCERT AT ST. MARY MOTHER OF GOD SUNDAY FEBRUARY 25 Chantry returns to St. Mary Mother of God for a concert of great Catholic polyphony by Lassus, one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, on Sunday, February 25 at 3:00 p.m. In his day the best-known and most widely-admired musician in Europe, Lassus is often named today with Palestrina and Byrd as supreme in the art of late Renaissance counterpoint. The program includes rarely-heard Lassus motets and canticles, and his beautiful Missa super Je suys desheritee. Reviewing a Chantry performance of Renaissance polyphony, Washington Classical Review said Chantry “sings this music extremely well,” with pieces “crystalline in structure and balance,” sound with “a virtuosic sheen,” and singing with “delightful rhythmic alacrity.” The Washington Post has hailed Chantry’s “vast expressive capacity and deeply ingrained sense of style.” Tickets ($50 adult, $20 youth ages 22 and under) are available at the door or on chantrydc.org.
