Reverse Open House Series

Reverse Open House Series Join us from November to June (and possibly beyond!) for a series of regular interfaith visits to DMV sacred spaces and Zoom dialogues. Who is this For?

We'll reflect their value and complexity in preparation for the dedication of the Washington, DC temple. Sacred Site Visits
From mosques to cemeteries, synagogues to statues, join us in visiting sites around the DC-Maryland-Virginia region as we learn what makes them sacred. We take an expansive understanding of the sacred, encompassing religious spaces and more. Zoom Dialogues
Join us as we embar

k on a collective conversation about the value of spaces set apart for gathering, contemplation, and remembrance, and explore the art and complexity of navigating these spaces. Interfaith Carpools
For this cherry-on-top experience, we will connect you with a small group of 6-8 others in your neighborhood who are attending the series. You can carpool, converse, and meet up as desired. Availability will depend on your area. Anyone 16+ may participate, regardless of religious identity. Maybe you have a spiritual home, maybe not. Maybe you’re not at peace in the place you call home. Maybe you’ve never even considered the question! The Reverse Open House Series will grant rare opportunity to explore the diverse religious and spiritual landscape of the DMV and dialogue with others who want to do the same, regardless of the path that brought them. What’s the Inspiration? That glowing, gorgeous six-spired temple off of I-495, operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be hosting an open house for visitors from April - June of 2022. The Reverse Open House Series will make this open house series into an expansive, reciprocal conversation about the value of sacred spaces to the individuals and communities that patron them. Note: This series is planned by Latter-day Saints but is not officially sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upcoming Visits

Fantastic event last Saturday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with with Reverend Monsignor Vito and David Zahren. What a wonderful opportunity to learn about the faith promoting history of the Basilica and experience the grandeur of such a large sacred space. Magnificent human-made edifices dedicated to diety help me to hold greater reverence for the great Creator of us all.

On December 11th, we visited the Catholic Worker House. This visit has given me an appreciation of the individual capacity to foster a sacred spaces and enact radical change. This change is rooted in tangible action flowing from deep religious conviction, largely free of formal religious institutions. House members related how they found their way “home” to the Catholic Worker House, and how they try to live and act on the principles Dorothy Day laid out when she established the movement. This visit has challenged my conception of sacred space. Can sacred spaces exist beyond the bounds of churches, synagogues, mosques, and established ritual? I believe so and listening to the stories shared, we understood that many of the speakers were sharing their relationship to a sacred space.

The Catholic Worker House hosts us this week where we learn about Dorothy Day's Catholic Worker Movement.

My first real encounter with Dorothy Day was in Paul Ellie's book "An American Pilgrimage." At 8 year's old, Dorothy Day experienced San Francisco's devastating 1908 earthquake. The tremendous charity and love she witnessed towards those impacted by the devastation transformed Day's life.

As Ellie relates "Dorothy Day felt the fear of God and witnessed elemental, biblical charity, the remedy for human loneliness. All her life she would try to recapture the sense of real and spontaneous community she felt then, and would strive to reform the world around her so as to make such community possible."

Check out this PBS documentary on her life for a better appreciation for her sacrifices and the movement she established.

Footage and interviews trace the life of social activist, Catholic convert Dorothy Day.
