Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior. This evening, his faith became sight. He faithfully endured until his race was run. More information will be available soon.

I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

On Monday, 5/12 @ 6:30pm at Martin's Grocery in Warsaw, IN (upstairs), we will continue our study of Hebrews starting with Hebrews 13:1.

Below are some of the notes from 5/5, Hebrews 12.

• Vs. 13:1-7: These are the moral instructions. This entire section is filled with ways we can love each other as brothers and sisters: Hospitality to strangers, remembering those in prison, honoring marriage (your and others), be content, and remembering your leaders who have raised you in the faith. (ref. Rom. 12:9-13)
• Vs. 13:8-14: These are the religious instructions. This is part of loving each other, but it deserves its own discussion. In a culture today that is continually trying to make Jesus conform to their believes, it is important to remind ourselves that we need to conform to Him. He is the same in Genesis through Revelation, he does not “change to meet the circumstances”. He does not “water Himself down” to bring people to church. He does not change His will for social issues. No, He is the same, our perception of Him changes. (ref. Isa. 40:6-8; James 1:16-18 [emp. 17b]; Gal 1:6-9)
• Vs. 13:15-16: This is a good summation of what Jesus called us to do, acknowledge and praise Him (believing faith) and do good works. This is not going down the path of good works for salvation, but because of salvation.
• Vs. 13:17-19: There is a double command here, we need to respect our leaders, but they must be worthy of that respect. In the judgement, they must give an account, not just for themselves, but the people they lead. Vs. 18 describes how the leaders should be, “we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way”. If the leader is not living that way, they are not the leader God has called them to be. Yes, we all make mistakes and sin, but if God has called you to be a leader, he has separated you to be a humble servant, not to promote yourself or for personal gain. (ref. 1 Pet. 5:1-7; 1 Tim. 6:3-10; Eph. 4:1-16; Titus 1:5-9)
• Vs. 13:20-21: As the author is pointing out God’s great power, he points out that it is with that power that God is equipping us for good works and to do what is pleasing to Him. It is not us, it is Him.

On Monday, 5/5 @ 6:30pm at Martin's Grocery in Warsaw, IN (upstairs), we will continue our study of Hebrews starting with Hebrews 12:1.

Below are some of the notes from 4/28, Hebrews 11:1-40.

Vs. 11:1-11:40 – Faith that Looks Ahead

• Vs. 11:1-3: Faith is not what we see, but what we believe, or better, what we know. We do not see God, physically, but we know he exists. We did not see Jesus be crucified and raise from the dead, but we know he did. We do not know the authors of the Scriptures, but we know they were inspired by God to write them. We do not think we know these things, but through faith, we definitely know them, no doubt.

• Vs. 11:4-6: Abel and Enoch pleased God with their faith in Him, that resulted in their actions. It was not their actions, but their belief in God and their belief they would be rewarded for seeking Him. Notice vs. 6 does not say rewarded for their actions but for seeking Him. Our actions are byproducts of our faith and seeking.

• Vs. 11:7: By faith Noah became heir to righteousness. Again, his actions were a byproduct of his faith. Even though it had never rained before, Noah spent years building the Ark, just because God said to build it.

• Vs. 11:8-12, 17-19: Abraham, the most revered figure for the Israelites, left his country by faith, looked forward to a child by faith, knew God would save Isaac by faith. He never looked to the things of the past, only to the future.

• Vs. 11:32-38: Those mentioned in this section lived through victories and trials, all by knowing that God’s reward was better than any reward they could have on this earth. (ref. 2 Cor. 4:7-18)

• Vs. 11:13-16, 26, 39-40: None of the people mentioned in this chapter were constantly looking back on what they had or had done, they were constantly looking forward to the promises God had for them. They might not have known Jesus by name, but they knew Him by promise. They did not receive their promise immediately, but they received the promise when we received it, when Jesus appeared. (ref. Rev. 21:1-8)

On Monday, 4/28 @ 6:30pm at Martin's Grocery in Warsaw, IN (upstairs), we will continue our study of Hebrews starting with Hebrews 11:1.

Below are some of the notes from 4/14, Hebrews 10:19-39.

• Vs. 10:19-22: Because our hearts have been cleansed by Jesus’ blood, we have confidence in our salvation, in the washing away of our sins, which allows us to approach God at any time. Drawing near with a sincere heart means completely opening ourselves to God, sincere, with no pretense of anything other than Jesus as our savior. (ref. 1 Cor. 1:4-9; 2 Thes. 3:1-5)
• Vs. 10:23: Jesus is faithful, so we have our hope in Him because of His sacrifice on the cross.
• Vs. 10:24-25: When we meet together, that is our time to say, “the heck with the world and it’s strife, the Holy Spirit is here with us, now”. Of course, He is always with us, but it is a reminder to us, when we have other believers around us.
• Vs. 10:26-31: As believers, we need to not deliberately sin. This is not unintentional sin or the occasional, purposeful sin, but the sin that we just continue to willfully engage in with a rebellious manner (“I know it’s wrong, but I don’t care.”). Continuing in deliberate sin is like crucifying Jesus over and over again. (ref. Num. 15:30-31; Heb. 6:6-8; 1 John 3:19-24)
• Vs. 10:32-39: Remember when you first received the knowledge and faith, do not let go of it. Having been saved, we need to always move forward, not retreat. There is not just punishment for those who disobey, but reward for those who are faithful to the end. (ref. Phil. 3:12-4:1)

There will be no Monday Night Men’s Bible Study this week due to the Easter holiday. We want to give men time to relax and recuperate from family get-togethers or traveling. We will resume our study of Hebrews on Monday, 4/28, starting with Hebrews 11:1.

Below are some of the notes from the last meeting.

Hebrews 10:19-39.

On Monday, 4/14 @ 6:30pm at Martin's Grocery in Warsaw, IN (upstairs), we will continue our study of Hebrews starting with Hebrews 10:19.

Below are some of the notes from this past week, Hebrews 9:1-10:18.

Vs. 9:1-10 – Outward Cleansing Only
• The sacrifices at the earthly tabernacle did not clean the inside, the heart (conscience), only the outside (appearance or superficial atonement).

Vs. 9:11-15 – Outside vs. Inside
• By offering Himself, Jesus did not just cleanse us, but he did it “so that we may serve the living God.” (ref. Eph. 2:1-10)

Vs. 9:16-28 – Blood Cleanses
• Jesus’ blood was sprinkled to cleanse everything for eternity. “…He entered Heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.” (ref Rom. 8:31-39, 1 John 2:1-2) Because He has already shed His blood as an eternal cleansing, when He appears again, it will not be to be sacrificed again, but to complete our salvation. As believers, we eagerly await that day (Rom. 8:19-25; 1 Cor. 1:7; Gal. 5:5; Phil. 3:20)

Vs. 10:1-8 – Annual Reminder vs. Eternal Forgiveness
• The old covenant sacrifices were not to take away sin, but a yearly reminder of sin. The blood of animals had no power to remove sin, just temporarily wash the stench of it away (kind of like a daily shower).

Vs. 10:9-18 – Being Made Holy
• Jesus’ sacrifice has made it personal for us, “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” When this happened, when He renewed our hearts and minds, when He covered us with the blood of Jesus, He remembered our sins no more.

On Monday, 4/7 @ 6:30pm at Martin's Grocery in Warsaw, IN (upstairs), we will continue our study of Hebrews starting with Hebrews 9:1.

Below are some of the notes from this past week, Hebrews 8:1-13.

Vs. 8:1- Our Old Covenant Failures and New Covenant Victories
• Jesus is greater because He is seated at the right hand of the Throne of God, where no other being is allowed to sit. Something to note, Jesus is not just up in Heaven waiting for us, He is the one who serves in the Heavenly Tabernacle. Just like the priests on earth, He is in the sanctuary every day offering sacrifices (Himself) for our sins. (ref. Eph. 1:18-23; Col. 3:1-4)
• Jesus establishes the new covenant for us today, not built on promises reconciliation through continuous sin and sacrifice, but of one sacrifice for all time.
• The old covenant (Ex. 20-31) was not bad, it was the fault of the people, they could not remain faithful to the promises of God and turned away from it. “But God found fault with the people…”, “because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.”
• The new covenant moved away from external purification and strict law adherence to internal purification. By “put(ting) my laws in their minds and write(ing) them on their hearts”, God shows us it is not our actions, but Him making us desire to follow Him. Our mind and heart cannot be faked, our outside appearance can. The new covenant promises: (1) an inner desire to obey God, (2) God is our God, (3) knowing God, and (4) sins being forgiven.

On Monday, 3/24 @ 6:30pm at Martin's Grocery in Warsaw, IN (upstairs), we will continue our study of Hebrews starting with Hebrews 8:1.

Below are some of the notes from this past week, Hebrews 6:13-7:28.

Vs. 6:13-20 – God’s Promise and Oath to Abraham
• There is no Promise and oath greater than God’s. Abraham received exactly what was promised, he just had to be patient for it (25 years).

Vs. 7:1-10 – The Greatness of Melchizedek
• The name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness” and “king of peace”. How fitting is this to compare Jesus to Melchizedek? By paying tithes to Melchizedek, Abraham confirmed that Melchizedek was greater even than himself. The lesser always pays the tithes the greater. Also, the lesser is the one blessed by the greater.

Vs. 7:11-28 – Jesus is High Priest Based on His Indestructible Life
• Because the high priests were human, they died, and the new high priest would change the law to fit his interpretation or what he saw fit. Since Jesus is still alive, he is the permanent high priest and is always interceding for us. Jesus does not have to offer sin offerings daily for himself and the people, as his sacrifice on the Cross was the “once and for all” sin offering. Because Jesus (and Melchizedek) were not from the priestly tribe (Levites), Jesus did not receive his priesthood “on the basis of regulation as to the ancestry but on the basis of power of an indestructible life.” Jesus was from the tribe of Judah, so he could only be the high priest with an oath from God.
