Journey of Grace: Day 9--Journey to the Truth
Reflective question: Why have you settled for superficiality instead of going deep with God?

Scripture: Matthew 7:13–14

Reading: Richard Foster opens Celebration of Discipline by stating, “Superficiality is the curse of our age.” Superficiality is a lack of depth of character or serious thought. If we refuse to seek truth, we will be shaped by whatever voices are loudest.
Do you know that Lent is a special time for the global church of Christ? We take a journey to discover how far we are living from the truth given in the holy text. We are called to reflect on the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan before he began his public ministry. Why? Jesus modeled many things for us in those 40 days so we could one day become one with the Father as He was, but we lack discipline. Not punishment, but habits with the sole purpose of revealing the truth to each as individuals and in a corporate body Jesus called His church. God knew we would need to be reminded over and over again about his commandments and ordinances, so He established holy days as reminders. The Father did not stop there for He sent a living message in His Son. Yes, Jesus talked the talk and walked the walk for those who would place their faith in Him.

Prayer: Father, rescue me from shallow faith. Give me hunger for truth and the courage to walk the narrow way with Jesus.

Practice: Choose one “noise source” you rely on (news, scrolling, entertainment) and replace 20 minutes with reading one Gospel chapter.

Journey of Grace: Day 8--Focusing on the Source of Life
Reflective question: Which path of meditation do you most need right now—Scripture, circumstances, creation, or silence?

Scripture: Ephesians 4:21-24; Romans 14:17; Psalm 119:97;
Psalm 101:1-4

Reading: There are many elements to consider when meditating. We can focus on Scripture, circumstances of the day, being in His creation, and recollection (centering down). I want to make clear that meditating on Scripture is not exegesis but a meditation on the Word given to us in love. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “…just as you do not analyze the words of someone you love, but accept them as they are said to you, accept the Word of Scripture and ponder it in your heart, as Mary did. That is all. That is meditation.” Paul discovered God’s love in creation while on mission trips and among other believers. The last means of meditation to expound on is centering down. This means of meditation is seldom known or spoken of in society today, but it involves spending time in silence to allow our minds to become centered on God instead of broken off in multiple directions by the world’s noise. These are four paths to a deeper walk with the Father. Warning, warning! Meditation is a risky business… spending time with God will bring about change in you that you can’t even imagine.
Are you ready to hear the voice of God echo in your heart calling you into a place many never reach? Yes, we are talking about change. Consider the words found in Ephesians 4:21-24, “… if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.” We die daily so we are made new each day with the Spirit within us. Oh, there is a reward here on earth as it is in heaven. We are not ‘called’ to wait but to be one with Christ this very day. I dare you to go deeper and try to discover the ends of His love, grace, and mercy! May the Grace of Jesus be with you all!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, quiet my heart and train my attention. Help me receive Scripture as the loving word from God and respond with obedience.

Practice: Read Psalm 119:97 slowly, then sit in one minute of silence and repeat one phrase that stands out.

Journey of Grace: Day 7--Seeking People
Reflective question: What do you do to rest in the Heavenly Father’s arms?

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Reading: When we fail to seek to know each other after we are married, marriage falls apart—or becomes a marriage of convenience. Relationships require giving to each other, and the same can be said of walking with Jesus. This is why we must meditate. Meditation is one of the inward spiritual disciplines that will enable us to go deeper in holy relationship with Jesus and, in turn, commune with the Father. Many believers know of God by reading Scripture, attending church, or watching The Chosen. However, they do not know Him. When we pray “Your will be done,” we should be learning God’s will and speaking it with love and grace. This type of relationship takes time and the willingness to put aside distractions to really go deep.

Prayer: Lord, draw me beyond knowing about You into truly knowing You. Teach me to listen and obey.

Practice: Set aside 5–10 minutes today to meditate on one Gospel scene where Jesus withdraws to pray; then ask, “What is God seeking to change in me?”

Journey of Grace: Day 6--All or None
Reflective question: How much of God do you want—just enough to be comfortable, or all of Him?

Scripture: John 17; Revelation 3:20

Reading: God does not invite us into a partial covenant. He calls for full-hearted surrender—love that holds nothing back. When we attempt to keep God “out of our business,” we end up building a relationship on control instead of trust. Jesus poured out His desires of us at the Lord’s Supper by inviting us into commune (marriage—oneness-whole). It was not new math where two equal one. Just reflect on the Trinity! He removes the doubt within a prayer to His Father. “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” -- John 17:20

Prayer: Father, I surrender my whole heart to You. Where I hold back out of fear or pride, give me trust and obedience.

Practice: Write one area you tend to keep “off-limits” to God (time, money, habits, relationships) and invite Jesus into it today.

Journey of Grace: Day 5--In His Presence

Reflective question: Do you desire to be in the presence of God daily—not just on Sunday, but every day?

Scripture: James 4:3; Luke 22:42; 1 Corinthians 3:7–9; Matthew 6.

Reading: Many people say prayer does not work, so they do not pray. My reply is simple: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” (James 4:3). Do you recall a lesson on meditation and the impact it will have on your spiritual growth? Evidently, we should come to understand the will of the Heavenly Father because we gain the mind of Christ. Given this truth, how can we pray, “God, Your will be done,” and not state plainly in our prayer God’s will? When we pray with the mind of Christ, we are filled with God’s thoughts, His love for all His creation, and His desires for the world.
Think of all the spiritual giants of the Church. I can guarantee that every one of them held prayer as the ‘main business of their lives’. Not social events, but prayer. Does that excuse us from being missional in our communities? Of course not, however, prayer should be a fabric in our life like breathing. I realize that many believers do not have such a prayer life. Start today! It is never too late for God will always meet you where you are and be your strength in building this vital spiritual discipline.
Do you believe prayer makes a difference? Consider what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:7-9: Clearly, we have been given a tremendous responsibility in releasing God’s will over all His creation. The goal of living for Christ was given first and followed by the tool to help us achieve that life. Walk deep, for blessed are…. (you fill in the next word).
The bottom line is simple. Real prayer is something we learn and is a discipline that will grow when you are willing and make the choice to develop a deeper prayer life.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to pray with Your will in mind. Make prayer the steady breath of my life, and not a last resort.

Practice: Set aside a time to pray out loud to the Father. It can be anywhere at any time but let God set the limit on your prayer time not the world.
