As news of Dolly Parton’s passing spread across the Duke campus today, the mood became solemn; students were glued to their cell phones and a colleague even reported a hush across the commons area. Dolly was this generation’s Elvis.

But Dolly was also a personality that transcended generations, societal divides, and connected with the young and well-seasoned alike. While she was immensely talented, she was most beloved for her love of people. She fully lived Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves—without exclusion.

Today, Duke Divinity gave members of the Methodist House of Studies the t-shirt pictured below. The message on it is the last recorded utterance of John Wesley, the spiritual founder of Methodism. “The best of all is, God is with us.” I find comfort in these words.

Dolly is now in God’s presence, and we will join her in glory when our work on earth is done. In the hopeful words of 2 Cor 5:8, “to be absent from the body” is “to be present with the Lord.”

May her memory be a blessing.

Hi First Church family!

Pastor Justin here with a brief update: I’ve arrived safely in Durham, North Carolina to study on the campus of Duke University. As part of my continuing theological education, I travel to Duke’s Divinity School once per semester for “intensives.”

Today, it was a joy to meet Bishop Will Willimon at our spiritual retreat. Willimon is a Duke professor, theologian, and prolific author who has written about 100 books. There were also several activities that helped us embrace Sabbath, and featured are a couple of my works of art. Clay is very spiritual, and Scripture reminds us: “… We are the clay, and You [God] are our pot maker. All of us are the work of Your hand” (Isaiah 64:8, NLT).

I’m soaking up this experience over the next few days and I look forward to seeing you again soon!
