Meet our Pastor - Steve Abney
- Where did you grow up?
I grew up here in the Warrior/Kimberly area. Our family moved here in 1982 when I was in the 2nd grade. I attended Bryan Elementary and Mortimer Jordan High School.
- What year did you start at North Highland?
I was called to North Highland in November of 2000. I was asked to do a month-long revival on Wednesday evenings. Later, I was asked if I would pray about pastoring the church. I immediately said no, but I would be willing to preach until they found a Pastor. During this time, I fell in love with the people and told the Lord that I would do it if He taught me how. I was 24 years old at that time.
- Tell us about your family.
Patti and I will be married for 28 years this coming February 7th. We are so blessed! When we came to North Highland, we were 24 and 22 years old. She is beyond what I could put into words. Being a wife, mom, and pastor’s wife has been the order of her role for these last 25 years. She has helped so many people in their walk with the Lord and has helped me be the man of God I am today.
We had our firstborn son, Andrew, who was a year old at the time. Since then, God has also blessed us with our youngest son, Jacob. Both of them love the Lord and are active in this church.
I’ve been blessed at North Highland to serve with most of my family. My dad was the Senior Adult Pastor for many years, where he and my mom led in our Prayer Ministry. Our oldest son leads worship and the Children’s Ministry. Our youngest helps with all ministries, and he’s a mean bass player!
- What are you currently working on in school?
I have finished my Master in Divinity and my Doctorate in Pastoral Ministry. I am currently an adjunct professor for the seminary I graduated from. I plan to pursue a second Doctorate degree soon.
In December, I will also move into a position with the school that will give me the opportunity to help more pastors become sharp, rooted, and experienced. God has blessed me with the privilege of discipling pastors and young preachers.
- What is your favorite Bible verse?
• John 15:13
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
• 2 Timothy 4:1-5
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”
- Anything else you’d like to share?
Jesus is Lord, and He is coming soon. Don’t look for eternal salvation in anyone or anything else.
