Join us on Wednesday nights throughout November for our new sermon series, “Gratitude Always Wins.”

As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, we’re reminded that gratitude is more than just a feeling; it’s a way of life. But where does true gratitude come from? That’s the question we’ll explore together over the next three weeks.

Wednesdays at 6:30 PM. Don’t miss it!

Meet Our Young Adult Pastor – Andrew Johnson

- Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Gardendale and graduated from GHS. In 2008, I moved to Hayden, and in 2016, I settled in Warrior, where I have lived ever since. Somewhere along the way, I slowly became a Blue Devil!

- What year did you start at North Highland?
Crystal and I began attending North Highland in 2009 after some of our friends invited us. After we married in 2011, we started attending regularly. I was saved in January 2013 and called to preach six months later. In 2015, after much prayer and consideration, I accepted the position of Children’s Pastor. Recently, I was appointed as the Young Adult Pastor.

- Tell us about your family. How long have you been married?
I’m the husband of my beautiful bride, Crystal. We’ve been married for 14 years. We have two sons: Slade (19), who works at United Rentals, and Holston (13), an 8th grader at North Jefferson Middle School. God has truly blessed me!

- What are you currently working on in school?
I’ve just completed all my assignments for the Master of Divinity program at Southern Bible College and will graduate in November. I’m looking forward to continuing my education to pursue a doctorate in pastoral ministry.

- What is your favorite Bible verse?
Romans 12:1–2

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

This passage beautifully describes a life wholly devoted to God. As believers, presenting ourselves as holy and acceptable before Him is the only logical way to live.

- Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I am so thankful for my NHBC family and how God has used them to shape me and my family into who we are today.

Always remember, Jesus has been and will always be enough.

The Mystery Revealed
October 27, 2025

Ephesians 3:1-6
1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Thoughts:
For generations, God's plan remained hidden: that all people, regardless of background, would be united in Christ. This mystery wasn't salvation itself, but rather who would receive it: everyone. The dividing walls between Jew and Gentile, slave and free, every tribe and tongue would crumble at the cross. You are part of this divine mystery: who were once "no people," now God's people. The same grace extended to the apostle Paul reaches you today. Consider how remarkable it is that God chose to include you in His eternal family. This wasn't an afterthought but His purposeful design from the beginning.

Prayer:
Who in your life needs to hear that they, too, are included in God's family? Pray for them now, and pray for the boldness to share Christ with them.

Meet our Pastor - Steve Abney

- Where did you grow up?
I grew up here in the Warrior/Kimberly area. Our family moved here in 1982 when I was in the 2nd grade. I attended Bryan Elementary and Mortimer Jordan High School.

- What year did you start at North Highland?
I was called to North Highland in November of 2000. I was asked to do a month-long revival on Wednesday evenings. Later, I was asked if I would pray about pastoring the church. I immediately said no, but I would be willing to preach until they found a Pastor. During this time, I fell in love with the people and told the Lord that I would do it if He taught me how. I was 24 years old at that time.

- Tell us about your family.
Patti and I will be married for 28 years this coming February 7th. We are so blessed! When we came to North Highland, we were 24 and 22 years old. She is beyond what I could put into words. Being a wife, mom, and pastor’s wife has been the order of her role for these last 25 years. She has helped so many people in their walk with the Lord and has helped me be the man of God I am today.

We had our firstborn son, Andrew, who was a year old at the time. Since then, God has also blessed us with our youngest son, Jacob. Both of them love the Lord and are active in this church.

I’ve been blessed at North Highland to serve with most of my family. My dad was the Senior Adult Pastor for many years, where he and my mom led in our Prayer Ministry. Our oldest son leads worship and the Children’s Ministry. Our youngest helps with all ministries, and he’s a mean bass player!

- What are you currently working on in school?
I have finished my Master in Divinity and my Doctorate in Pastoral Ministry. I am currently an adjunct professor for the seminary I graduated from. I plan to pursue a second Doctorate degree soon.

In December, I will also move into a position with the school that will give me the opportunity to help more pastors become sharp, rooted, and experienced. God has blessed me with the privilege of discipling pastors and young preachers.

- What is your favorite Bible verse?

• John 15:13
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

• 2 Timothy 4:1-5
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”

- Anything else you’d like to share?
Jesus is Lord, and He is coming soon. Don’t look for eternal salvation in anyone or anything else.

Join us tomorrow morning at 8:45 or 11:00 am for worship. We would love to see you at NH.

Meet Our Worship & Children’s Pastor – Andrew Abney

- Where did you grow up?
I grew up right here in the Warrior/Kimberly area and attended schools in the Mortimer Jordan feeder pattern.

- What year did you start at North Highland?
North Highland has been my home church for my entire life. However, about two years ago, the Lord called me into the ministry as both the Children’s Pastor and Worship Leader. I am deeply grateful for the many members who have poured into my life through the years and for those who continue to influence and shape me today.

- Tell us about your family.
I am blessed to be married to my wonderful wife, Sara, for three years. Together, we have a precious baby girl, Alaina, who is six months old.

- What are you currently working on in school?
I recently completed my thesis for the Master of Divinity program at Southern Bible College and will graduate this November. Looking ahead, I plan to pursue a Doctorate in the coming years as the Lord leads.

- What is your favorite Bible verse?
My favorite verse is John 15:5, which reminds me that without abiding in Jesus, we can do nothing. Our strength doesn’t come from ourselves, but from remaining connected to Him, the True Vine. When we abide in Him, there is nothing we cannot accomplish in His will!
