LABOR DAY FACTS

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday.

On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

2 CENTS A MEAL – Sunday September 6
This denomination-wide offering is collected in PCUSA churches across the country. The concept was originated by Presbyterian women in 1976. The funds raised provide an opportunity for groups, families, and individuals to participate and consistently help to lessen world hunger. “2 Cents a Meal” is a strategy for raising awareness – and funds – for the fight against hunger.

AT FPC, the Deacons collect 2 CENTS A MEAL offerings at the door after worship on the first Sunday of each month.

SUNDAY ADULT BIBLE STUDY
9 to 9:45 a.m. • Beginning Sept. 13
EXPLORING THE PARABLES OF JESUS

We began this journey during our Adult Vacation Bible Study with four better-known parables. Now, for seven weeks, we will explore some of Jesus’ less familiar stories and consider what they have to teach us today.

A parable is a story about a simple, familiar subject thatmJesus used to illustrate a deeper and more meaningful spiritual truth. Together, we will discuss these stories, share our interpretations, and consider how Jesus’ teachings speak tomour lives today.

OUR UPCOMING STUDIES
September 13 - The Unmerciful Servant
September 20 - The Lowest Seat at the Feast
September 27 - The Ten Virgins

Join us for thoughtful conversation, new insights, and a deeper look at the stories Jesus used to teach.

THE WOMEN’S DESSERT AND DIALOGUE STUDY GROUP meets in the Parlor at noon on the third Thursday of each month beginning September 17.

This year, we will read “Pastrix” by Nadia Bolz-Weber, a “New York Times bestselling author who takes no prisoners as she reclaims the term ‘pastrix’ (a term used by some Christians who refuse to recognize female pastors) in her messy, beautiful narrative about an unconventional life of faith.”

Please see Sue Dennis or call the Church Office if you would like to join this study.
