We often think closure means finally getting the answers we have been waiting for.

Why did they do it?
Why did it end?
Why didn't things turn out differently?
What could I have done?

Sometimes those answers come.

Sometimes they don't.

And sometimes, we spend so much energy waiting for someone else to give us an explanation that we forget we have another choice.

We can accept that we may never understand everything that happened.

We can stop asking the past to become different.

We can decide that not knowing everything doesn't mean we cannot move forward.

Maybe closure isn't always about getting the final answer.

Maybe sometimes it's about deciding that the unanswered question no longer gets to hold you there.

Labor Day is often associated with a day off, the unofficial end of summer, and one last long weekend.

But perhaps it's also worth pausing to consider the dignity of work itself.

Not all work is glamorous.
Not all work is highly paid.
Not all work is recognized.

But much of the work we do makes someone else's life a little easier, a little safer, a little better.

The work of caring.
The work of serving.
The work of creating.
The work of teaching.
The work of building.
The work of simply showing up and doing what needs to be done.

No work is insignificant when it contributes something of value to the lives of others.

Retreat September 18-20 - https://mailchi.mp/fivechanges.com/calendar-14066208
Participation in Family Constellation work breaks the spell of relying on explanations, the repetitive quest for logical solutions. It brings you home to trust,a new truth, the wisdom of your body.

We tend to think of legacy as something large.

A body of work.
A great accomplishment.
A name people remember.

But maybe legacy is much quieter than that.

Maybe it's the kindness someone remembers years later.

The courage you helped someone find.

The lesson that stayed with them.

The way someone felt seen, heard, or believed in because you were there.

We may never know all the ways we leave pieces of ourselves behind.

Maybe our legacy isn't what we leave behind.
Maybe it's what we leave within others.

“Legacy is not what’s left tomorrow when you’re gone. It’s what you give, create, impact and contribute today while you’re here that then happens to live on.” ~ Rasheed Ogunlaru

Empathy is often described as the ability to understand or share another person's feelings.

But perhaps it asks more of us than that.

Empathy asks us to pause before judging.
To listen before assuming.
To become curious about an experience we may never fully understand.

It doesn't require agreement.
It doesn't require abandoning our own perspective.

It simply asks us to remember that there is a human being on the other side of the story.

Perhaps that's what makes empathy radical.

We are often told to trust the process as though doing so guarantees a particular outcome.

But life doesn't make those promises.

Sometimes trusting the process means accepting that we cannot see what is ahead, while still believing that we can handle what comes.

We don't have to know how the story ends to keep turning the pages.

Maybe the real thing we're learning to trust isn't the process at all.

Maybe it's ourselves.

Wendell Berry died this week at the age of 92. Throughout his long life, he wrote about nature, community, love, loss, and the complicated beauty of being human.

This little poem of his feels like a particularly fitting way to remember him.

It is about death, but it doesn't feel like a poem about death.

Maybe that's the point.

The full poem, and a beautiful reading of it, can be found here. ❤️

Fear asks:

What if it doesn't work?
What if they reject me?
What if I fail?
What if I look stupid?
What if everything goes wrong?

Wisdom asks: What if it doesn't?

“Don't be ashamed of being scared. To be afraid is a sign of common sense. Only complete idiots are not afraid of anything.” ~ Carlos Ruiz Zafón

What if everything goes wrong?

“I wonder if fears ever really go away, or if they just lose their power over us.” ~ Veronica Roth
