This coming Sunday we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Catechism tells us that the Trinity is the “central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself.” As Mass begins, we will sing Holy Holy Holy #216, coming forth to first and foremost give praise to God singing - “Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty; God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.”
As the gifts are prepared we will sing All Hail Adored Trinity #707 - sung to the Old Hundredth melody. This hymn begins by again singing praise to the Trinity. Verse three is a beautiful example of how we believe, when we participate in Mass, we are uniting our voices with those in Heaven - “with the songs that angels sing, unite the hymns of praise we bring.” This is similar to the words spoken by the priest just prior to the singing of the Sanctus, in which our voices are joined with “the angels and the saints.”
As we come forth to receive Communion, we will sing How Great Thou Art #431. In the Gospel, we will hear one of the most famous passages in Scripture - John 3:16. The third verse sings of this passage as we will proclaim - “And when I think of God His Son not sparing; sent Him to die; I scarce can take it in. That on the cross; my burden gladly bearing; He bled and died to take away my sin.”
As we go forth, we will sing the third verse of Holy God We Praise Thy Name #207. Nourished in Sacrament, we go from Mass joyfully proclaiming our belief in doctrine of the Trinity as we sing - “Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, Three we name thee; while in essence only One; Undivided God we claim thee.”
