đź”® Witchcraft 101: What Makes a Spell Work?
In traditional and modern witchcraft, a spell is generally understood as focused intention combined with symbolic action. There isn’t scientific evidence that spells produce supernatural effects, but the ritual itself can be meaningful and can help someone focus, change habits, and commit to an intention.
The strongest spellwork usually has these pieces:
1. Clear intention — Know exactly what you want to release, protect, attract, or change.
2. Focused emotion — Your attention and emotional commitment give the ritual personal meaning.
3. Correspondences — Use symbols that match the intention: colors, herbs, candles, crystals, moon phases, elements, etc.
4. Words & visualization — State the intention clearly and picture the desired outcome.
5. Action — Do something in the real world that supports the spell. A protection spell, for example, might also mean establishing an actual boundary.
6. Timing — Some practitioners choose moon phases, days of the week, seasons, or planetary associations that symbolically fit the work.
7. Release — After performing the spell, stop obsessing over the result and allow yourself to move forward.
8. Consistency — Repeated practices, journaling, meditation, or practical steps can reinforce the intention.

Intention → Ritual → Action → Release
A candle doesn’t have to be magically powerful by itself. The candle can become a physical symbol of the decision you’re making.
For your New Jersey Witch School, I’d phrase the lesson this way:
“A spell isn’t about forcing the universe. It is about focusing yourself. The clearer your intention, the stronger your commitment, and the more your actions support that intention, the more meaningful your magic becomes.”
And for tonight’s waning-Moon lesson: don’t just say “I release it.” Identify what you’re releasing, take one practical step to change it, perform your symbolic ritual, and then let it go.
