This week, I lingered in the final breath of Malachi’s words and I felt the unbearable weight of what followed.

When the prophet finished speaking, heaven did not answer.

The echo of his voice faded…and then… nothing.

Four hundred years of silence.

No open vision.

No burning word.

No prophet rising with fire in his bones.

No “Thus says the Lord” breaking the darkness.

Four hundred years of waiting.

Of longing.

Of groaning.

Of hearts lifted toward heaven that seemed sealed shut.

Generation after generation was born into the quiet.

They lived.

They died.

And still, no voice.

Until one night.

On a dirt floor in a forgotten place…

in a stable that did not look holy…

in the shadows of obscurity and insignificance…

a sound was released.

After four hundred years, heaven spoke again, not with thunder, not with fire, not from a mountain, but from the lungs of a newborn.

A cry pierced the silence.

A cry that split history in two.

A cry that carried eternity within it.

In that moment, the King of Glory stepped down into the dust of His own creation.

The Eternal wrapped Himself in skin.

The Word became flesh, and cried.

The Son laid aside His throne and chose a manger.

Heaven’s highest treasure placed in a feeding trough.

He came low.

He came meek.

He came breakable.

Wrapped in swaddling cloths, laid where animals ate, born beneath the looming shadow of a cross.

A Lamb born to be slain.

The Hope of a hopeless world breathed His first breath in the dark.

A weary world rejoiced as a young virgin labored and delivered its redemption.

In that manger, the Great I AM made Himself vulnerable.

Touchable.

Killable.

And with one holy cry, the silence was shattered.

The separation was broken.

The way was opened.

Then, suddenly, heaven could not remain quiet.

The skies erupted with angelic voices declaring,
“Glory to God in the highest!”

Wonderful.

Counselor.

Mighty God.

Everlasting Father.

Prince of Peace.

With the cry of an infant, heaven invaded earth.

Behold, our Redeemer.

Behold, our King.

Behold, the fulfillment of every promise.

Behold, the sound that broke four hundred years of silence.

Not the roar of an army.

Not the shout of a king claiming His crown.

But the fragile cry of God with us.

He did not arrive with a sword in His hand, but with nails already written into His future.

He did not enter wrapped in royalty, but in cloths that foretold a burial.

The silence was not just broken, it was answered.

Every unanswered prayer.

Every tear cried into the dark.

Every generation that waited without seeing.

Every promise that seemed delayed but not denied.

All of it converged in that single cry.

That night, heaven did not just speak, heaven gave.

God did not send another prophet.

He did not send another sign.

He sent His Son.

And in that stable, eternity took its first shallow breath.

Omnipotence learned weakness.

Glory learned humility.

Love made itself small.

The cry that shattered the silence would one day be echoed again- not from a manger, but from a cross.

The first cry said, “He has come.”

The final cry would say, “It is finished.”

From swaddling cloths to grave clothes, from a feeding trough to a borrowed tomb, He came to be broken so we could be made whole.

And even now, that sound still reverberates.

It calls the weary.

It awakens the forgotten.

It reaches into the places where heaven has felt silent again.

If God could speak through the cry of a baby,
He can still break silence in our darkest night.

So behold Him.

Not distant.

Not untouchable.

Not unmoved.

But Emmanuel.

God with us.

MOMENTS WITH MELODY
“Obedience”
November 3, 2024
by Melody Osborn

This week at school we have been learning all about the prophet Elisha, and how God worked through him to help people. We looked at three passages: Naaman, the widow with the oil, and the Shumanite woman’s son. These were not all the acts Elisha performed, but the ones we focused on.

It never ceases to amaze me the many lessons we can learn from the word of God. The lesson I was reminded of this week as I was rereading these passages in 2 Kings, is one that can be found in many other passages in the Bible as well; how important our obedience to God is in His blessings for our lives. If we want to receive the good that God has for us, we must have faith and be and obedient to His will, even when what He asks us to do makes no sense to us, or the world. It is helpful to remember that God is not of this world. We are of God, made in His image, but He is not of us. It is not our job to understand now what our minds were not made to comprehend, we must only have faith and let that faith guide us in our obedience.
Jesus himself says in John 13 to His disciples, “Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” John‬ ‭13‬:‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

It is not to say that when we are obedient to God our lives will always be rainbows and butterflies, but rather to say that what God wills for our lives is more than what we can hope to achieve on our own.

I am reminded of Paul’s testimony to this from his words in Philippians 3, ”though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.“ Philippians‬ ‭3‬:‭4‬-‭11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God got Paul’s attention in a pretty big way on the road to Damascus (Acts 9), and while we may not all have an interaction with God such as this, at some point we will all encounter God in our life, and then we will have a choice to make; be obedient to Him, or to our own flesh.

Galatians 6 warns, ”Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.“ Galatians‬ ‭6‬:‭7‬-‭9‬ ESV

My mind goes back to Jesus, and His obedience unto death for our sins. Galatians 5 says, ”For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.“ Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭19‬-‭21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Jesus’s obedience granted us the choice between life or death. Our obedience will determine our eternity.

MOMENTS WITH MELODY
“Darkness”
October 20, 2024
by Melody Osborn

MellaRose does not like darkness, she never wants to be in the dark by herself. When we must walk in the dark she will say, “Mom turn your light on!”, and I will turn on the flashlight that’s on my phone so we can see, so she won’t be afraid.

The world has been a dark place full of sin ever since the Garden of Eden, and I can’t help but agree with her about darkness. I don’t like the darkness, especially not by myself, I feel much better when a light is on. Just as there is a light for Mella, there is a light for our world as well, and we all have access to this light. John says, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John‬ ‭8:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We do not have to fear the darkness this world faces, for we have Jesus, and His light is never turned off. Even if we choose to not acknowledge His goodness, others will. Luke says, “And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.” Luke‬ ‭19:37-40‬ ‭KJV‬‬

As a follower of Jesus, we are called to make sure we spread His light in this world, so that others may not have to fear the darkness either. Matthew 5 says, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew‬ ‭5:14-16‬ ‭KJV‬

Sometimes it is very intimidating to be seen in a world where it is criticized to be so different, but we must remember what Jesus said in Matthew, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew‬ ‭10:32-33‬ ‭KJV‬‬

But do not fear, God will never leave you helpless against this world. Psalms 18 says, “For thou wilt light my candle: The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.” Psalm‬ ‭18:28‬ ‭KJV‬

The Lord will help keep your candle burning, and when there is light, we do not have to be afraid of the dark.

How does a worm get inside an apple? Perhaps you think the worm burrows in from the outside. No, scientists have discovered that the worm comes from the inside. But how does he get in there? Simple! An insect lays an egg in the apple blossom. Sometime later, the worm hatches in the heart of the apple, then eats his way out. Sin, like the worm, begins in the heart and works out through a person’s thoughts, words, and actions. For this reason, David once wrote, “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” —The Bulletin

MOMENTS WITH MELODY
“Eggs and Ham”
October 6, 2024
by Melody Osborn

I am sure we are all familiar with the book Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss. I read it many times as a child, and we read it almost every year in our preschool class when we talk about the letter E. One of the questions I asked my students as we were reading, was if they liked eggs and ham. Many of them did, and I told them my family had eggs for breakfast almost every morning! None of them thought they would want to try the green eggs and ham though, and that got me thinking; they know what eggs and ham are, why can’t they see past the green? Throughout the book, Sam I Am’s friend is scared to try his green eggs and ham too. Sometimes when reading a story like this, a lesson presents itself to me, and I try my best to explain it.

When I think of Sam I Am, I think of Jesus. When I think of the green eggs and ham, I think about God’s word, and the gospel, and how the world has tried to turn it green; tried to turn it into something that is rotten, not normal, and therefore it cannot be good for us. But that is not the truth.

Paul warns in 2 Timothy, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.“ 2 Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God’s word is not green, it has not turned rotten. The Holy Spirit is still in the world, begging the lost and the hungry to try what God has to offer them. Jesus knows, and we should know also, that no matter what the world tries to do to the Truth, it will never change the fact that it is still the Truth. It is our job as followers of Christ to help the world see past the green. Paul instructs us also in 2 Timothy, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.“ 2 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭15‬-‭16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

If we look closely, if we study what is presented to us before we turn our noses up at it, we will discover that God’s word is still good. It stands, and His love for us remains steadfast. Isaiah 41:13 says, “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.“ Isaiah‬ ‭41‬:‭13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I know that it can be hard to see past the deception of the enemy, but one thing we can know for sure is, green or not, it was always eggs and ham. God’s word will always be good, no matter who tries to turn it bad.

MOMENTS WITH MELODY
“Lost”
September 29, 2024
by Melody Osborn

Have you ever lost something that was so important to you that you couldn’t sleep, or seem to function without it? Both of my daughters are very attached to their blankets. They must have them, and it cannot be any other blanket, no matter how new or how much softer the other blankets are, they must have their blankets. To the extent that they cannot sleep without them, and it makes dealing with the booboos and unhappy moments very difficult if they are not within reach. They are young, and their blanket is their comfort; it’s what they want close so them in the good times and the bad.

Recently we lost Molly’s blanket. It was getting way past bedtime, she has a cold and was cranky, but we still could not find it. It was making us quite hysterical actually; how could we have lost her blanket? We don’t even have a big house, so there’s not a lot of places to lose it! We looked and looked and decided we would just have to put her to bed without her blanket. Frustrated, I did my best, prayed, and somehow got Molly to go to sleep without her blanket. I never stopped praying though as I rocked her to sleep, and continued to search while she wiggled in her bed after I laid her down. Eventually, thank the Lord, we found it tucked down deep inside our chair. I happily reunited her with her blanket, and all was well again. She settled down and was able to fall asleep.

Sometimes I look around and I feel like the world has lost the “blanket” of our world, Jesus. The one thing that brings true comfort and peace. And they have even tried to replace Him with other blankets; other things, something new, something softer, something different, but no matter how hard they try, they can never replace what they desperately need. 1 Timothy 2 says, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” 1 Timothy‬ ‭2:5-6‬ ‭KJV‬‬. We must pray, and never stop searching for Jesus. Even if we somehow lose Him, and He somehow gets tucked away where we cannot find Him. He is worth searching for. ‬‬‬‬

I must admit, when we first lost Molly’s blanket, I didn’t think to pray about it right away . In the chaos of the situation I just set out looking and trying to fix the problem on my own, but eventually it dawned on me that I can’t do it alone, so I prayed. Oh, how much this is relevant to our lives. As much as we want to, we can’t do this alone. We are either thriving with Jesus, or only surviving without Him. Which sounds like a fuller life to you?

I know what you’re thinking, people grow out of their blankets, this is probably not the best example to use, but try not to focus on the blanket as much as how important they are. We all have things that are very precious to us. My girls are little, they do not know not to put so much value and trust into things that cannot really help them. But we know where our trust should go. It should not be in people, money, or anything else of this world; only Jesus. We know what needs to always remain with us, and the important things will remain with us, even if they do get tucked into a chair sometimes. “In God is my salvation and my glory: The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, Pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” Psalm‬ ‭62:7-8‬ ‭KJV‬‬‬‬‬‬

There is nothing more important than Jesus. It makes dealing with the booboos and unhappy moments we have quite difficult when He is not a part of our life. He is our hope. Psalms 112 says, “Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” Psalms 112:6-7 KJV.

He is our comfort, and if we want to truly settle down and rest, we must be persistent in our search to find Him, especially if we are what is lost.
