March 13th Discussion Notes:
1 Corinthians 14

Praying in tongues, prophesying, and women being quiet in church. That's a rather loaded set of things to talk about. I'm sure we didn't cover it all, but here are a couple of things we observed:
- There seems to be two different types of tongues talked about in the New Testament. One being a language that can be interpreted, either by another person, or by the Holy Spirit. Another being an unintelligible language that the Spirit utters on our behalf, and that is beneficial for the individual in his relationship with God.
- Paul certainly seems to be a big fan of tongues, but wants to make sure that it's used for the right purposes, and not in church where it's not beneficial to others.
- Prophesying doesn't always mean fore telling, but rather forth telling. It's simply a person being the mouthpiece of God to His people.
- According to Paul, this gift of Prophesy is really beneficial in the gatherings, but only when done in an orderly fashion.
- And as for the ladies in the church, we decided that based on other portions of Paul's writings, there's no way that this could be a blanket statement for all women to be silent in the church.
- In looking at the whole chapter, it seems as though there's 3 groups of people that Paul is talking to in the gatherings that need to Sigao, or be silent.
1.) the people speaking in tongues, without an interpretation
2.) the people prophesying out of turn and talking over each other
3.) the ladies (potentially unruly) that seem to be interrogating their husbands

Paul reminds the group that God is a God of order, not chaos. And everything needs to be done in love.

March 6th Discussion Notes
1 Corinthians 13

Oh my. Where to start? We tend to pull this out and use it for weddings or valentines day, or other reasons we want to talk about love. And while it can certainly be used for any of those occasions, let's take a look at where Paul placed it.

If you zoom out, and look at chapters 12 and 14, you'll see that he's talking to them about the chaos of their gatherings, and what they should do to improve them. Then right smack in the middle of this conversation, he talks about the need to love each other. The need to act for the well being of another, regardless of how they respond to me.

He ends chapter 12 by saying, "But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And yet, I am going to show you a far better way." Then he starts chapter 14 by saying, "Pursue love, yet earnestly desire spiritual gifts."

If we seek perfection, or as Ephesians 4:13b states, "to be a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ", then we must learn what it means to agape well. But as we seek after that, we should earnestly desire, and seek after the spiritual gifts as well.

February 27th Discussion Notes

1 Corinthians 12. What a powerful, and often overlooked chapter! We tend to overlook it because we don't know how to deal with what he's saying. But today we dove in headlong.

We still don't know everything, but there are a couple things that became clear:
- gifts are a manifestation of the Spirit
- they're given for the common good of everyone, not just for one person
- different gifts are given to different people, but by the same Spirit
- when these giftings all work together in the church, it's a powerfully beautiful thing, just like the human body
- we are to earnestly desire the greater gifts

Paul wraps it up beautifully at the end with the last verse. Gifts are good, and we should desire them, but there's something even better.

But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way.

July 25th Discussion Notes

Galatians 2:21 NASB
I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.

Even after the council at Jerusalem had determined that the Gentiles didn't need to be circumcised to be saved, there was a group of people trying to drag the Galatians back into the old way of thinking.

What are ways that you're stuck in your old way of thinking? What if you'd learn to let go of that in the grace of God? How are you subconsciously telling Christ that His death was in vain?

July 18th Discussion Notes
Paul wrote letters to the early churches that were dealing with all kinds of issues.
- Half of the church body consisted of circumcised Jews, and the other half were Gentiles who grew up worshipping at the temples of the gods that represented the latest regime in Rome.
- Some of the men were still sleeping around with the temple prostitutes and thought it was fine.
- There was very limited respect for the women in that day and age.
- And if these new found Christians didn't worship the current powers that be, it would mean almost certain social alienation.

Hmmm, so Paul was addressing the early church on issues of equality, national allegiance, keeping or not keeping certain traditions, and living morally pure lives? Maybe we should listen in.

Join us as we take a look at the letters of Paul over the next several months.

July 11th Discussion Notes:
The better we understand The Story, and how we fit into The Story, the better we'll be able to apply the Gospel to the entirety of our lives.

1. We were created in the image of God, and declared good, and given the order to be fruitful, multiply, and subdue the earth.

2. We continue to choose our own logic, and use our own wisdom instead of resting in the wisdom and guidance of God. So in our own way, we're eating from the same Tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil that Adam & Eve ate from.

3. When we, who are given authority over every living thing that moves upon the face of the earth, continue to make choices according to our own wisdom, comfort, preferences, and desires, we end up reaping the consequences, and living in defeat and shame.

4. The Gospel is about bringing restoration to a humanity that has lost its way. Jesus took our defeat and our shame upon Himself so that we can be restored to a life of listening to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, and once again take our proper role on the earth!

5. When we can lead lives free of shame and condemnation, and rest in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, our lives become portals of Heaven for the people around us to witness. Righteousness, Peace, and Joy are the true markers of a life lived in awe of the grace and goodness of God.

Conclusion - Every minute of every day, we have the opportunity to make choices based on our own ego or chaotic idea of wisdom and logic. Or we can make choices based on a revelation that the Spirit has given us. How we choose to live will impact generations. If we mess up today, Jesus gives us the opportunity to wake up and do better tomorrow.
