A message from Pastor Jeff:

The New Testament book we call Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to a group of Jesus-believing churches in Rome in about 56 CE. At that time, there was controversy among the Roman believers about whether it was necessary to also follow Torah if one wanted to be counted as Christian. It was a really big deal in those early days, both in Rome and elsewhere. For some Jewish Christians, following Torah was a non-negotiable, and for some gentiles, following Torah, and meeting all of its requirements, was a big ask. Paul's solution to the problem was simple and unique, and the application of that solution in our time is fundamental to how we understand Christianity today.

This Sunday, we will mark our reentry into Ordinary Time with an extraordinary passage from the book of Romans and learn what Paul's solution was. Here's a hint - it has to do with the word in this picture.

It's also Confirmation Sunday, where we will welcome seven of our own young people into full covenantal membership in our church. It's going to be a glorious day that you won't want to miss. Service starts at 10:00 am, in person or online on Facebook or YouTube.

See you Sunday!

A message from Pastor Jeff:

Jesus said: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Those are literally the last two verses in the Gospel of Matthew, and also the first time that that most trinitarian of phrases (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is uttered in the New Testament Canon. Was Matthew thinking of a "three-in-one God" in the way that we think about the Trinity today? It's hard to say for certain, but what we can know is that our biblical forebearers experienced God in myriad ways, and the Gospel writers tried to reflect and memorialize that experience in their words. Join us this Sunday at 10:00 am, in-person at the church or on-line via YouTube or Facebook, and we'll attempt to make some meaning of our own from those words and allow ourselves to be reminded again that the Still Speaking God still inspires us.

See you Sunday!

A Message from Pastor Jeff:
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a noise like a strong, blowing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw something like flames of fire that were separated and stood over each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages by the power the Holy Spirit was giving them. “
That’s how the New Century Version of the Bible describes the moment when the Disciples were “baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5b).

Some of the most evocative Christian art is inspired by this moment (like the image above). To me, the image is as frightening as it is inspiring. It is both repellant and alluring, It is a flaming power that I want to touch even though I feel it’s burning heat and want to run away. The fire that both burns and cleanses. The promised energy to change everything. It is power to change the world.

The Holy Spirit comes to First Church this Sunday, my friends, and we’ll hear from someone that was there on that fateful day.

We will also collect the second of our four yearly Special Offerings, The Strengthen the Church Offering. This offering reflects the shared commitment of people across the United Church of Christ to cooperatively build up the UCC. Conferences and the national setting equally share the gifts given by members and friends through their local congregations. The funds raised support leadership development, new churches, youth ministry, and innovation in existing congregations. By your generosity to this offering, you build up the Body of Christ.

I hope to see you all Sunday. Wear red!!
