Good morning! When we think of the fruit of the Spirit becoming more evident in our lives, we don't think of complaining, criticizing or doubting God's promises. In Numbers chapter 11, the Israelites had traveled a long time, having left the land they grew up in, and all the familiar things. As often happens when we begin an adventure in faith, they started looking backwards. They missed their familiar cuisine. Then, they made the mistake of complaining about it, which was heard by God. He gave them the meat they craved, but because they hadn't appreciated his provision of manna along their journey, many were struck down by the plague the Lord sent as they ate. Complaints and discontent have consequences. Then, Aaron and Miriam criticized their brother, and leader, Moses, for having married a Cush*te woman (chapter 12). It was almost as if they didn't think anyone could hear them. But, God did. The Lord was very angry with them, and he departed, leaving Miriam with leprosy. Moses prayed for her, after Aaron begged him to, and she was kept outside the camp for seven days because she was defiled.
Unfortunately, the people hadn't learned not to doubt or complain against what they saw the Lord doing. When the 12 spies from Israel explored the Promised Land, 10 came back with good reports of the land, but fearful reports of the inhabitants. Only two were faithful, encouraging the people to trust the Lord to keep his promises. The people listened to the loudest voices, the 10 complainers. Those adults were never allowed into the Promised Land. (Numbers, chapters 13 to 14)
May we who have the Holy Spirit living inside of us fight the temptation to complain, criticize and doubt. May we hold on to the promises in God's Word, the Holy Bible, and speak what He speaks. May we not complain about the gifts in our lives. May we not criticize people who are imperfect, but seek to follow the Lord's will. Then, may we see His promises to us fulfilled, as we praise His holy name. Blessings on the journey!
