LEARNING - HOW - SEE.... the other side? All sides? All values?

We might be dipping into some rough waters, but these biases are VERY prevalent everywhere, and so we're going to venture into the political waters this Sunday - but in a spiritually and faithfully focused "boat" if you will. Be Still is a place of many different minds and experiences - spiritually, politically, and otherwise - so if we can't talk about this stuff in a safe space here, then.... well, we might be up a proverbial creek.

Nevertheless, let's grab our "oars" and row with these biases (as defined by Brian McLaren of the "Learning How to See" podcast - link in comments) for conversation:

💎Conservative/Liberal Bias: "Either leaning toward nurturing fairness and kindness, or toward enforcing purity, loyalty, liberty, and authority, as an expression of my political identity. Our brains like to see as our party sees, and we flock with those who see as we do."

💎"When we feel shame, we are vulnerable to stories that cast us as the victims of an evil conspiracy by some enemy “other.” Our brains like stories in which we’re either the hero or the victim. Under stress or shame, our brains are attracted to stories that relieve us, exonerate us, or portray us as innocent victims of malicious conspirators."

Rather than debating, we're going to take stock of the values we hold - spiritually speaking - and consider how they play a role in our daily lives. If I value honesty, how do I live that out? Where might I be struggling with aligning my values and actions? If I value wisdom, what is my definition of that and who do I consider wise? If I value freedom, what does that look like in our world today and are there places where I am NOT free or perhaps I am keeping others from being free?

All sorts of things to consider before we begin to dye the water red and blue. You're invited to grab your paddles, your flotation devices and join us this coming Sunday, May 31st at 9:00 a.m. OUTSIDE in the back yard at in Wales. I promise, no more water/boat references.... 🚣🏻‍♀️

LEARNING - HOW - TO - SEE.... 🔎

when we're comfortable... or when we get paid to look the other way...

This week we're turning to Comfort and Cash Biases for our contemplative practice service and discussion... let's look at how Brian McLaren defines these (link below to Learning How to See podcast - Season 1, Episode 5):

💎Comfort Bias: "I prefer not to have my comfort disturbed. Our brains welcome data that allows us to relax and be happy, and our brains reject data that require us to adjust, work, or inconvenience ourselves."

💎Cash Bias: "It’s hard for me to see something when my way of making a living requires me to not see it."

Be honest - can you think of ANY examples you may have some biases against someone or a something because it's too uncomfortable to think otherwise? Or perhaps you have a job that pays the bills but requires you to be less concerned with the impact of the product/service?

How do these biases influence our ability to "live a good life", to live out the Gospel that Jesus has shared? To live in harmony with ALL people and animals and nature? To be ONE with all things?

We've talked a bit about having biases is often times necessary for survival, security, safety.... it's when they get so ingrained in our minds and hearts that we can't see circumstances and situations that might call for a different way of seeing in order to love our neighbors or even love ourselves.

You've invited to join us this week on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. OUTSIDE in the back yard at in Wales to wonder and contemplate this topic and these questions. ALL are welcome - bring your beverages and biases out back! ☕

LEARNING - HOW - TO - SEE 🔎

We're on our 2nd week of Learning How to See, contemplating Brian McLaren's 16 biases along with Scripture and life experiences (see link below for Season 1 of the Learning How to See podcast). This weekend, we'll be engaging with Contact, Community, and Complementarity Biases. Here's Brian's definitions to help get you thinking (and don't worry, we ALL have biases... it's human nature, often meant to help us with self-preservation, safety, security, and survival; sometimes though, we can utilize them in ways that aren't really all that helpful and in fact, may be harmful to our growth and our relationships with others).

💎Contact Bias: "When I don't have intense and sustained personal contact with 'the other', my prejudices and false assumptions go unchallenged."

💎Community Bias: "It's almost impossible to see what our community doesn't, can't, or won't."

💎Complementarity Bias: "If you are hostile to my ideas, I'll probably be hostile to yours. If you are curious and respectful toward my ideas, I'm more likely to respond in kind."

Great questions, conversations, and curiosities are being had in a calm, judgement-free, and faithful setting.... Might this be something you're seeking? Everyone is welcome in this space - no membership or religious affiliation required! Just bring yourself and your wonderings. Feel free to reach out to us with questions!

See you Sunday, May 17th @ 9:00 a.m. - OUTSIDE in the back yard at in Wales. ☕

LEARNING - HOW - TO - SEE.... 🔎💎

Week 1 of this cool series begins Sunday! Last week we introduced 16 biases that Brian McClaren of the Center for Action and Contemplation has laid out for us in his podcast "Learning How to See" (links below). We begin this week discovering CONFIRMATION and COMPLEXITY biases and how they interact with scripture and our lives today - we're ALL biased, ALL susceptible to biases... can we become aware of them, learn how they serve us appropriately, and understand where they may become harmful to living a good life? That's what we're going to find out!

To help you get thinking:

💎Bias: "Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair."

💎Confirmation Bias: "The human brain welcomes information that confirms what it already thinks and resists information that disturbs or contradicts what it already thinks."

💎Complexity Bias: "We prefer a simple falsehood to a complex truth."

Join us on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the Pink Room (or the backyard, weather permitting) to contemplate and reflect on our faith and interaction with others. ALL are welcome - no need to be of a certain religious persuasion or practice any at all - our goal is to give space to questions and curiousity in order to walk with people in their faith journey, however that may look.

A - SUMMER - OF - LEARNING - HOW - TO - SEE🔎

Remember when you were a young child and new things, big or small evoked a sense of wonder, awe, curiosity... a desire to know about something more? Over time, we all grew up and our life experiences taught us patterns which caused our brain to recognize circumstances, situations, "truths" (some may say) in order for us to survive and make sense of the world... 💎

While that can be helpful in many ways, we have forgotten our sense of wanting to know more... because truth gets buried and varied. People don't all recognize the same patterns in the same way and our tendency to discount or stop trying to connect has become a norm that has caused way more harm than good.

Brian McLaren, the author of "Why Don't They Get It?" and facilitator of the "Learning How to See podcast" has shared some very insightful discussion about 16 biases all of us likely have and relate to. We can't help it - it's human nature to have biases.... what we can help is whether we allow them to influence more connection or disconnection - with ourselves and with others.

Over the next 6 weeks, Be Still Sunday will give space to contemplate a couple of the biases through prayer, meditation, discussion, writing, and other spiritual practices. Can't make Sundays or just want some extra info? Check out Season 1 of the podcast and/or read Brian's e-book (links in comments).

To discuss all of this in a safe space where you can bring your whole self, not be judged, and be allowed to ask questions and will be acknowledged is a pretty special things these days - I'm really grateful that Be Still is a space like that. YOU are welcome to join us at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings at in Wales.

PAUSING - TO - BLINK

I don't believe that God or Creator or Spirit or Love or One is single "person-like" being like us, but if I did, I imagine this HUGENESS of this being and how SLOW they would blink. Not a quick, millisecond blink like we do, but a more deliberate, closing of the eyelid that takes a few minutes to close and few to open back up. A slower, more restful and intentional blinking; as if there were a purpose other than wetting our eyes...

What if we took a few minutes to blink like that? To stop and close our eyes slowly, allowing the lids to rest for a moment while we briefly connected with the HUGENESS and PRESENCE of Creator Spirit around us? What if we brought the weight, the worry, the tense, the fear into this space of blinking so that we could release those feelings while we envision them disappearing and allowing something deeper, more natural and life-giving to enter into those mind and heart spaces instead?

Rather than just talking about it, we're going to try to do just that at Be Still Sunday during a "Blinking Walk" around the neighborhood of Mama D's in Wales. Join us at 9:00 a.m. outside in the backyard for different kind "be still" experience.
