A perfect Veteran’s Day post:
For years I have been told that someone once spent several summers walking the cemetery and mapping out every Veteran’s grave. I was told there was a map made but no one knew where it ended up. Recently, Bill Kirnan stopped by with a surprise for me. He had retrieved the map from the Walden VFW, but the legend and corresponding information was not with it. Yesterday afternoon, Kathy Penney called to tell me she had found all the paperwork to go with it. I met them at the VFW, picked up the paperwork, headed home and started digging. What I have is a thorough listing of all the Veterans buried and their coordinates in the cemetery. This project was an incredible amount of time and work. From what I can gather, the original project was started in the 1970’s on hand drawn maps by Margie and Art Jackson. It was then continued and scaled for a final version by others that was completed in 1989. I’m so grateful to Bill, Dave and Kathy for seeing that this project was not lost and that it made it to me for preservation. I’m already finding answers to questions I thought were lost to time.

The Wallkill Valley Cemetery is more than just a place where our loved ones are laid to rest—it is a sacred ground that holds our shared history, honors generations before us, and offers a peaceful place for remembrance and reflection. We take pride in preserving the dignity, beauty, and tranquility of this space—not only for those who have passed, but for the families and future generations who visit.
Maintaining the cemetery is a year-round responsibility that requires ongoing care, resources, and dedication. From routine upkeep of the grounds and pathways, to repairing aging infrastructure, improving landscaping, and honoring veterans and loved ones with seasonal decorations and memorial services—each of these efforts ensures that the cemetery remains a respectful and welcoming place. This fundraiser is essential to continuing this mission. As a nonprofit cemetery, we rely heavily on the generosity of our community. Your donations help us:
* Keep the grounds clean, safe, and beautiful
* Restore and preserve historic headstones and monuments
* Improve facilities and services
* Improve and expand the landscape
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference. When you give, you're not just supporting maintenance—you’re helping preserve a sacred space where memories live on, and where the community comes to find peace and connection.
Please consider donating to our fundraiser. Your support ensures that Wallkill Valley Cemetery remains a place of dignity, respect, and remembrance for generations to come.
With gratitude,Brant Winum, Superintendent
