Calvary Baptist Church of Wakefield, Michigan

Calvary Baptist Church of Wakefield, Michigan Ephesians 3:21: "To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen"

Our core commitment is that the church is not our invention; the church belongs to Jesus Christ, and he defines what it should be like in the Bible. For that reason, we seek to submit to Scripture in every aspect of church life. Our agenda is not set by our preferences, but by the Word of God. Because we believe that the Bible is the authority for the church, our services are characterized by thor

ough teaching from Scripture. Our goal in each sermon is to take the biblical text and explain what it means, in context, and how that applies to us. We also make much of theology: because we believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, we are convinced that there is value in seeking to understand how it all fits together. But the goal of Bible study is not academic: the first and greatest commandment is to love God with our whole beings, and the second is to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe that the Bible reveals God's plan of redemption: that God's standard is perfect holiness, that we all sin and fall short of his requirement, and that Jesus Christ has met that standard in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve and offering to us his righteousness, to be received by faith. This gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is the most important message of our church. Our goal is to proclaim this good news so that people are converted to Christ. Then, we work to help Christians grow in spiritual maturity, in their knowledge of Scripture, so that they too are equipped to do the work of ministry, so that the whole church is involved in building one another up in Christ. We seek to grow in love for God, exalting him in worship that is reverent, so that we learn to prize his kindness and his majesty. We believe that the church is central to God's work in the world today, and that being part of the church is not merely optional for people who believe Jesus. In the church, we find encouragement to continue in love and good works, accountability, and a community in which we can show the love of Christ to one another.

Obviously, we're expecting a *lot* of snow tomorrow. My first comment, as always, is to use your best judgment: even *if* we choose to meet, if it's not safe for you to try to come, please stay safe.

That said, it's looking like conditions won't allow us to meet, but I'll make a final call no later than 8:00am tomorrow morning. Occasionally, the forecasted snow doesn't arrive, and I'd hate to preemptively cancel services unnecessarily. In either case, I will post our service plans both here and send an email to those on our church email list.

Just a quick reminder: Pastor Riley will never email randomly asking for help like this. This is (unfortunately) a common scam tactic targeting churches. Things to watch for:

1. It is not my email address.
2. I'm not the "Senior Pastor."

If you ever get a message like this, please delete it and let me know.

Next Friday, October 6, we will begin our annual Seminar on Theology for Worship. This year, our guest speaker will be Mark Herbster.

Our Lord told us that "the Father is seeking such people to worship him" (John 4:23). The Bible tells us several ways in which we relate to God: as children to a Father, as subjects to a King, and so on. But the most basic relationship a people can have to their God is as worshipers; this is essential to what it means to have a God.

For this reason, thinking biblically about worship is of central importance.

Our schedule for the seminar will be:

Friday
• 6:00–7:00 Dinner
• 7:00–8:00 Session 1: Worship as Response

Saturday
• 8:30–9:00 Coffee/Donuts
• 9:00–10:00 Session 2: The Tests of True Worship
• 10:00–10:15 Break
• 10:15–11:30 Session 3: The Components of Common Worship
• 11:30–12:15 Lunch
• 12:15–1:30 Session 4: Biblical Philosophy of Music 1
• 1:30–1:50 Break
• 1:50–2:50 Session 5: Biblical Philosophy of Music 2
• 3:00–4:00 Q&A

Do we have any reasons to believe that the Bible is trustworthy? In this video, Pastor Michael Riley first explains the importance of having a trustworthy Bible. Then he distinguishes three different objections people raise against the Bible, which he'll address in future videos.

If you want to get some of those answers now, consider listening to this session from our series last year on Christianity's tough questions: https://baptistwakefield.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Is-the-Bible-Trustworthy.mp3

Can we know that we are right with God?

________________________________________________

Why Do We Need a Savior?
⦿ God does not accept us as we are and He will judge sinners (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23).
⦿ We cannot do good works to earn God’s favor (Titus 3:5).
⦿ The penalty for sin is death and hell (Matthew 25:41).

How Can Jesus Save Us?
⦿ Jesus, while remaining God, became fully human, the promised Messiah and King (Philippians 2:5–7).
⦿ Unlike every other human, Jesus fully kept God’s law (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 7:26).
⦿ Although He never sinned, He died to take the judgment of our sin Himself (1 Corinthians 15:3–5; 1 Peter 2:24).

What Should I Do?
⦿ We must respond in faith and repentance (Acts 20:21)
⦿ Faith means that we believe that Jesus’s work alone is how we can be right with God (John 14:6).
⦿ Repentance means that we submit to Christ as our rightful Lord, so that we are no longer at peace with our sins (2 Corinthians 7:9–10).
⦿ We are not saved by our works, but if we have put our trust in Christ, we now live for Him (Romans 6:1–2).

We are rejoicing in answered prayer! Today, the Buerger's grandson Nante, who had been missing in the Porcupine Mountain State Park since Saturday afternoon, was found alive and safe. This is an extraordinary goodness shown to the Buerger family from our heavenly Father, and as their church family, we rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15).

We had been praying diligently for God's kindness throughout these past few days, and so it is right and fitting for us to praise him.

The substance of our Wednesday midweek service will be taken up with our thanksgiving to God for the safe return of Nante. We will sing hymns of thanksgiving, read Psalms of thanksgiving, offer prayers of thanksgiving, praising God for the goodness that he showed through the kind providence of those who participated in the successful search.

I would invite our church family to join us this Wednesday night for our service of thanksgiving. In addition, many in our community were praying for the search for Nante; if you know those who would like to join us in our praise to God for his goodness, please invite them.
