Recently in Houston, Mohamed Hussein walked into the Texas Republican Convention as a delegate. He walked out in tears. Today we observe Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. That gap between the law's promise and its delivery still has something to teach us about the distance between justice declared and justice realized. As a congregation rooted right here in Texas, we feel a particular call to remember this history honestly and to keep asking where that same gap between promise and practice still shows up today.

For people of faith, Juneteenth is more than a historical commemoration — it's a celebration of liberation, resilience, and the long, unfinished work of freedom for all of God's children. We give thanks for the faith and perseverance of those who survived slavery and built communities, churches, and futures in its aftermath, and we recommit ourselves to anti-racism, justice, and reconciliation in our own time. Happy Juneteenth.

What does love mean?

Lake Shore knows that true love, unconditional love, is God’s love for all people.

At Lake Shore, love is seen in the way the church congregants care for each other; a hearty laugh heard from one of the many classrooms, kolaches and donuts left by the coffee machine, and the pursuit of God side by side.

We, as a united congregation and community, know that God’s love is for all people from all walks of life.

Our doors are always open; there will always be a hand to shake and a friend to connect with. Lake Shore will always provide a firm reminder of God’s withstanding and adaptive love that knows no bounds.

Our community would love to connect with you on Sundays at 10:45 am, either in person or online. There is always a seat for you at the table.

What happens after graduation?

When supporters give to Bright Stars of Bethlehem, they are doing far more than funding a scholarship or supporting a classroom. They are helping nurture filmmakers, artists, educators, therapists, entrepreneurs, and leaders who will go on to strengthen their communities and shape the future of Palestine.

Join us for Beyond Bethlehem: Where Hope Goes Next, a special live conversation exploring the lives, careers, and impact of graduates from Dar al-Kalima University. Through personal stories and firsthand experiences, you'll hear how education in Bethlehem has empowered graduates to become creative professionals and change-makers who are creating impact in their communities and beyond.

Hosted by Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb, Founder and President of Dar al-Kalima University, this inspiring discussion will feature alumni sharing their journeys from the classroom to careers in film, art therapy, visual storytelling, and other creative fields. Their stories offer a powerful look at how education, creativity, and opportunity continue to shape lives long after graduation.
