The Anchor

In the 1969 Western, ‘The Wild Bunch’, there is an extraordinary scene near the end of the movie, during which there is an all-out gun fight between the bad guys, and the... other bad guys.

Everyone is shooting everyone, and during the total chaos we find Pike (played by William Holden), suddenly burst into a room where he sees a young lady who appears terrified. He realizes that she is being held at gunpoint by a ‘bad guy’ that is hiding behind the door. Pike shoots the gunman, and the young lady is saved. And they all lived happily ever after.

HOWEVER, that is not really the end of the story. Only moments later we see the same young lady ruthlessly shoot Pike - her rescuer.

There is a great lesson to be learned from our dramatic actors in this story. You see, we often believe that we are doing a great job by helping someone that we believe to be in great distress. And then... we suddenly find ourselves ‘shot in the back’ by the very person we were trying to help.

And that pretty much sums up our entire relationship with the evil forces that run rampant in this world. Satan is very good at pulling us into tricky situations, only to turn and cause us immense grief and harm when we become invested in the sad state of affairs.

It is absolutely imperative that we, as Children of the Living God, enter every situation, relationship, and circumstance with our spiritual eyes wide open. Always pray for discernment, direction, and protection, and never just ‘assume’ you are doing the right thing.

It is so very important to remember that Satan is fantastic at back-stabbing, and dragging us down into despair and heartache. Do not give him the chance to pull you down! Keep your eyes focused on righteousness!

The bottom line? Watch your back! The enemy might be up to no good!

An adolescent owl that was found stuck in a concrete mixer in southwestern Utah is finally on the mend, flying free and maybe a bit wiser from the ordeal.

The great horned owl somehow made his way into the truck-mounted mixer in late October and was discovered by workers pouring concrete at a resort construction site. Lucky for him, a series of people gave a hoot about his predicament.

Workers hosed the bird down before it was wrapped in a towel. It took days for employees at the Animal Sanctuary to pick the concrete from the bird’s face, chest and wings, using forceps to carefully crack the dried debris and cleaning the feathers with toothbrushes and dish soap.

The owl started its long recovery at an aviary, and employees anxiously waited for it to grow new feathers. But the bird didn’t molt as predicted. In early May, he underwent a procedure called imping, which uses adhesive to graft donor feathers onto existing shafts.

Great horned owls typically have tufting on the edges of some of their feathers that allows them to fly quietly as they hunt. But the concrete frayed the rescued owl’s feathers and caused it to make a whooshing sound while flying. By the end of the procedure, the owl had 10 new primary feathers and a secondary feather on his right wing.

The bird was placed in a large aviary to recover from the anesthesia and quickly took flight after awakening. The owl hovered for a moment while the aviary roof was retracted, gained speed and then flew out into the wild.

There are so many great lessons here, but probably the most profound is that it took a whole village the rescue the owl. It started with being taken from the cement mixer, went to those who carefully cleaned the bird, and progressed to medical professionals who helped with recovery. Every group had a specific purpose in the mission.

And so it is with us. It takes a village to win the lost! Every single one of us has a specific job. There are those who work within the church, those who help with outreach projects, those who encourage the believers, those who are absolutely outstanding witnesses, and those ever faithful prayer warriors. But, it takes the whole village to really reach the world for Jesus.

So, never think your part in the family of God is not important. Every job is important. It takes a village!

(And... never try to live in a cement mixer...)

Ever have ‘one of those days’?

Recently, two men from New York state decided to summit a Colorado mountain peak during a road trip. Around 5:00 p.m., the Alpine Resue Team received a call for assistance - the men were off course, and just a bit lost. Rescue officials guided the men back on course, and they made it to the summit. Minutes later, one of them called back to report they had both been struck by lightning.

About 30 rescuers went up the mountain while another team used a Colorado National Guard Blackhawk helicopter to get the more seriously injured man, who was nonresponsive and in critical condition, off the peak using a hoist at 14,200 feet (4,330 meters). The helicopter made a second trip to fetch the less seriously hurt man.

Wow. Lost, then hit by lightning. Just... wow. That definitely qualified as ‘one of those days’!

As intense as this news item is, there is still more to report!

The rescuers report that Colorado’s previous record for a helicopter rescue was 13,700 feet (4,175 meters). Such rescues are challenging because thin air causes helicopters to lose lifting ability the higher they fly; the Blackhawk has an altitude limit of about 19,000 feet (5,800 meters).

Bottom line:
1) Two hikers lost, and rescued.
2) Hikers then struck by lightning and rescued again.
3) Rescuers celebrate record breaking rescue.

We can look within the details of this story and see a most amazing parallel to the God we serve. You see, we often stray off course and lose our way. But God - will rescue us when we truly call on Him. Sometimes we fall into more problems and require rescue yet again - and again. But God - continues to rescue us when we call on Him. (Even though we probably don’t deserve His continued attention - since we continually stray from His care.) But God - at the end of the day (in spite of our stubborn ways) - will always bring us another victory to celebrate!

Yes, God is merciful and loving, and continues to pull us back to Him. However, maybe it’s time to stay on the right path and take shelter in His arms.

Surely you can find something to celebrate when considering all of the good things God does for you, without having to call out the National Guard helicopter!

As storm chaser Ashton Lemley picked his way through a tornado-ravaged Mississippi trailer park, he heard the unmistakable meow of a kitten pierce the predawn darkness. The homes were flattened just hours earlier as storms spawned at least three tornadoes across the bottom half of Mississippi, injuring a dozen at the trailer park in the rural community of Bogue Chitto.

Lemley quickly dug under insulation from a flattened wall until his flashlight beam found the kitten — wet, scared and hiding between two wooden posts. Lemley captured the moment on video: “Oh my goodness, I found him!” he says to the camera. Lemley handed the kitten off to the commander of the United Cajun Navy, a volunteer disaster-response group, who dried it off and took it to safety.

The entire area was devastated - yet one tiny, very vulnerable life was preserved amidst the rubble. And, one very committed person was willing to dig through the destruction, dirt and devastation until he could offer rescue.

Isn’t that how God works? Even when we find ourselves surrounded by impossible situations and debris (most often brought about because of our own disobedience and resistance to righteousness), God is still reaching down his hand and digging through our mess to rescue us. We are much like the kitten - very small and helpless, with nothing to offer. But God! Yes - God! And that one name can offer help, hope, rescue, and complete restoration.

We just need to learn from the kitten - when in need, we must ‘meow’ (cry out) to the One who is listening. To the One who hears us when we call His name.

The hand of rescue will come. He is just waiting for you to ‘meow’ your very loudest!
