Did a gift you gave or received fall short of expectation this Christmas? Well, what if I told you that our happiness and joy was directly linked to the joy that we bring to the lives of others, not just on Christmas but throughout the year. When we wait for the monumental occasions of life to express our love and appreciation it places entirely too great a weight and burden on THE gift and is a level of expectation that no gift can live up to. But what if we gave thoughtful mini gifts to the people in our lives regularly throughout the year, not just on Christmas and special occasions. The mini gift could be the extra cup of coffee you pick up for your secretary at work, an email of appreciation to a mentor, shoveling a neighbor's sidewalk when we shovel our own, or visiting with a senior in our lives. These mini gifts not only bless others but also plant seeds of goodness and joy into our own lives AND the "Happy New Year" that we all desire to have now becomes a reality.

Romans 12:15 is hard yaw. The bible instructs us to mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice. This is a biblical discipline that most adults have difficulty with let alone a teenager. But this was the lesson my daughter had to learn this week. When things in our own lives are not the way we want them to be, it requires maturity, character and selflessness to step outside of your own disappointment to be happy for someone who is riding high, but it is what the Lord requires. By doing so we honor God we honor our relationships and we mature emotionally and spiritually. Okay family, living out Romans 12:15 is not easy. But know that in Christ you can do hard things. @ Beauty for Ashes Christian Counseling

It has been a little over a month since Bentley and I became empty nesters and we are finding our way.
Last week dad and I got a call from our youngest. She was upset about an issue that had surfaced and I could hear the despair and sadness in her voice. We offered comfort, encouragement and prayed that God would intervene in the situation. After we hung up God reminded me that while a lot has changed since we dropped her off at college, my primary role as her mother is the same today as it was when she was a little terror running around the house— and that is to point her to Christ, her loving and ever present help in time of trouble. Mom and dad, our kids may no longer need us to cart them around or do their laundry but as they navigate adulthood and are confronted with challenges they will often need us to comfort, calm and keep them in remembrance of God’s care and concern and his promise to never leave nor forsake. @ Beauty for Ashes Christian Counseling

Okay empty nesters, let not your heart be troubled. This season holds the potential for tremendous growth both you as well as your children.
Our kids are proving to themselves that yes they can care for themselves successfully without us being their ever present help. Yes moms they will be alright:) And parents, we are growing in our faith as God demonstrates that he can look out for them even better than we can.
Are you a prone- to- worry parent? Ps. 91 is a great go to. Praying these verses over your children will help discipline your thoughts, stir your faith, calm your fears and remind you that no matter where their lives take them, they are always under His watchful eye and loving care. @ Beauty for Ashes Christian Counseling

Two weeks ago my family celebrated my oldest daughter's graduation from college and my youngest daughter's graduation from highschool. A week later I was boarding a plane to take my youngest at college. On the return flight home, as I looked out of the airplane window... it hit me like a ton of bricks... My husband and I are officially empty nesters!!!
There are 22.5 million empty nesters in the US who like me have experienced the same weird and unsettled feeling. The good news is they have all survived. So I know that I will get through this. But the transition isn't easy. And while I have counseled people going through major life transition, it's time for me to take my own advice. Over the next few weeks I will share my journey with you and offer some of the same suggestions that I have shared with others. Hope it encourages you as you journey through your own "how did I get here" life transition.

A friend recently asked, "What's the difference between Christian Counseling and traditional counseling and which is more effective?"

Biblical counseling and traditional counseling are not at war with each other. They can actually coexist and complement each other. However, there are some key distinctions worth
noting.

1. Biblical counselors apply the truth of God's word to the challenges people face with a goal of encouraging proper alignment with God and with others. Other resources, tools and
interventions may be used to support the counseling process. However, the Word is the ultimate authority.
2. Additionally, biblical counselors are free to share personal experiences with the counselee because we believe that God comforts us so that we can comfort others. Ministering
comfort through shared testimony is one of the key components of the biblical counseling
process.
3. Lastly, the most important characteristic of biblical counseling is the critical role of the Holy Spirit that enables us to accomplish what we can't accomplish in our own strength.
