Eastside Fellowship held its Vacation Bible School event this past week (June 21 - 25). It was truly the most exciting week of the summer as kids had lots of fun while learning about the Three Persons in one God: Father, Son, & Holy Spirit.

Many of the kids are now expressing faith in Jesus as their Savior and Lord.

We give thanks to our God for the work He is doing in the hearts of these children.

This coming Sunday is Pentecost, the day we look back on the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the early church. Much attention is placed on the initial phenomena of the event including the rushing wind, tongues of flame, and speaking in tongues.

But we also need to focus our attention on the longer term affects the Spirit's outpouring had on that early church. Acts 2: 41-47describes what the church was like on that day and immediately afterwards:

"Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

This Sunday we will gather to pray for a similar outpouring with similar effects on the church today.

My child, listen to your father’s teaching and do not forget your mother’s advice (Proverbs 1:8, NCV)

This past Sunday we heard a message about Jesus' well known parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15.

The parable is the story of a patient, loving father waiting for his wayward son to forsake his life of "wild living" and return home. Eventually the son does return and the father is there waiting to welcome him back with new clothing, a ring, and a big celebration.

The parable is a beautiful picture of our Heavenly Father's attitude toward sinners.

However, it must be noted that there would have been no robe, no ring, and no celebration if the son had not humbled himself and returned home. He needed to repent.

This was the heart Jesus' message: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near" (Matthew 4:17, NET).

This past Sunday we heard about the power of the Holy Spirit in the believer's life in regards to overcoming sin and death. Romans 8:2 from the New Living Translation communicates this truth very well.

I encourage everyone to read and meditate on Romans 8:1-17 to grasp the work of the Holy Spirit in leading the believer in Christ in a living righteously.

This Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday commemorating Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

A very large crowd spread their clothes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. Then the crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted:

Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!
(Matthew 21:8-9)

Despite the adulation of the crowds, Jesus was actually making His journey to the cross. Just prior to his entry Jerusalem He predicts this very thing:

While going up to Jerusalem, Jesus took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them on the way, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death. They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.” (Matthew 20: 17-19)

We too must make our "journey to the cross" so that our "old self" might be crucified with Him so that our sinful nature might be slain and replaced by the life Jesus gives (Romans 6:6-8).

This coming Sunday will be the final message in the series focusing on Jesus' eight "I am" statement from the Gospel of John.

We will focus on John 14:6 where we see the exclusivity of Jesus' message. He doesn't just show us the way, He IS the way.

He doesn't just declare truth, He IS the truth.

He doesn't just give life, He IS the life.
