The Rite of Election is the formal acknowledgement of the Bishop of those catechumens (i.e. non-baptized) who are preparing for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Season. Here in the Eastern Vicariate of the Diocese of Richmond, the Rite of Election took place on Sunday, February 26, at St. Pius X in Norfolk. St. John the Apostle was blessed to have the largest group of catechumens (now called "elect") present. Among our newly elect are numerous young adults. Please keep them all in your prayers as they (and those in RCIA who are already baptized) prepare for full sacramental initiation into the Catholic Church.

Remember that tomorrow, February 22, is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season. Masses tomorrow will be at 8 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence. All Catholics aged 14 and above are obliged to abstain from eating meat (with the exceptions of eggs and seafood). All Catholics aged 18 through 59 are to fast unless impeded by medical necessity. Fasting means only one full meal is allowed, with two smaller meals which together do not add up to a full meal allowed to sustain strength. Have a fruitful start to Lent!

Tomorrow, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation. The Immaculate Conception refers not to Jesus Christ (as is mistakenly believed even by some Catholics) but to the Blessed Mother, who, from the first moment of her conception, was spared the stain of original sin (and therefore subsequent actual sin) in order to be a fitting vessel of God the Son. Although proclaimed a dogma in 1854, the belief in her Immaculate Conception extends itself all the way to the early Church. The Solemnity is also an American celebration, as the Bishops of the United States formally consecrated the country to the Immaculate Conception in 1846. What Mary celebrated from the moment of her conception will be our reality when we enter heaven.

Masses at St. John the Apostle will be at 7:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.

Tomorrow, November 1, is the Solemnity of All Saints, a holy day of obligation. (As a reminder, our celebration of Halloween or "All Hallows Eve" always points back to the preparation for All Saints). All Saints commemorates the Church Triumphant - all those who are gathered before the Lord in Heaven and are experiencing the Beatific Vision. This includes not only canonized saints recognized by the Catholic but all those "marked with the sign of faith" who stand before God fully perfected in holiness.

Please join us for Mass at 7:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m; and 7:00 p.m.

All Souls Day Mass will be at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2. This is our regularly scheduled weekly SJA School Mass. Father Rob will be wearing his black chasuble and the names of all those who have passed away over the past year will be remembered.

Today is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Normally, this is a holy day of obligation in the United States. However, the bishops of the United States have removed the obligation for certain holy days that fall on a Monday or Friday. This year, Assumption remains a holy day but not one of obligation. Nonetheless, it is a worthwhile thing to participate in Mass if possible. We had a beautiful Mass this morning at 7:30 a.m. For those looking for an evening Mass, here are a few options:

St. Gregory the Great, Virginia Beach - 6:30 p.m.
St. Matthew, Virginia Beach; Holy Spirit, Virginia Beach; Star of the Sea, Virginia Beach; St. Benedict, Chesapeake - 7:00 p.m.

Our Lady assumed into heaven, pray for us!
